徐冰:我们能够把安·汉密尔顿请到中央美术学院来做这个讲演是一件非常幸运的事情。她确实在当代艺术领域做过很多事情,而且她的作品对艺术圈特别是对我个人其实有过很多的启发。我是90年去了美国纽约参与艺术圈的各种活动,我们刚去纽约对当代艺术有各种各样的想象,安的一件作品给我非常深的印象,一个非常大的空间,地面全铺满了马鬃,中间有一个桌子,有一个女孩子穿着白衬衫在那儿用一个小的烙铁在烫那书上的字,很安静,一个字一个字烫穿,是这样一个作品。当时实在是在哪儿都没见过这样的作品,而且哪儿都没见过并不是我的孤陋寡闻,因为当时整个艺术圈也没有见过这样的作品。

安特别善于用特殊的材料,让这些材料说话,与空间发生一种关系,她在装置的语汇上、空间的使用上,对国际的当代艺术特别是装置领域有很多启示性的贡献。后来过了一段时间,我认识了安,认识安是在一次(MoMA)PS1的展览上由陈小文给我介绍来,我今天是想先把陈小文引出来,再由陈小文来介绍安。

 

陈小文是“千人计划”里面的一员,千人计划是要求很高的一个计划,一般都是给科学上有贡献的人。陈小文在中国和美国的艺术圈与文化圈中做了很多事情,他能来中央美术学院,参与中央美术学院学术的建设是非常重要的事情,今天的讲演由陈小文来主持,也算是他第一次和美术学院这种关系的公开露面。下面就有请陈小文。

:2001年,我跟徐冰、安一起在(MoMA)PS1看展览那天起,就埋下对今天这个场景的期待的种子,十五年之后,终于我们在北京、在中央美术学院相聚。1998年,我和我的夫人一起见到安的时候,我马上想到徐冰,当时也不知道为什么,后来我就做了他们的“媒人”,把两位大师引见到一起,真是很有意义的历史会面。

徐冰老师曾说,他认为当代艺术中很多的作品、艺术家,会让观众感觉自己无知、愚蠢。我觉得他说的非常准确。但如果看徐冰老师和安·汉密尔顿这样的艺术家的作品,观众就不会感到羞怯,不会感到自己无知,因为这个时候我们看的书、我们对当代艺术所有的了解、所有崇拜的各种观点、各种哲学家,一切全都抛到脑后了。今天谈安·汉密尔顿的作品,的确感觉是用身体来体验,而不是用你的大脑去认识和去解读。这一点,安·汉密尔顿自己说的特别清楚,她总在各种公共场合上提到一点:
我们用我们的感知、我们的身体来认识这个社会,来了解艺术,来交流。


安的作品让我们关注视觉以外其他的感知器官,人可不可以用皮肤、耳朵去认识外界,转过头来重新认识自己。安在一个很重要的访谈里边提到她的一个朋友说过的话,这个朋友是一个诗人,他说:
听觉,是从远处来触摸。    

现在有请安。

 

安·汉密尔顿:如果有问题,你们就来敲敲门


汉密尔顿:小文老师,谢谢你。也许作为一个艺术家,能够给予另外一个艺术家最大的礼物就是理解。这种理解是不需要语言来表达的,虽然你的语言也是很美的。我现在要出去一下跟外面的观众打个招呼,我马上就回来。

从哪儿开始呢?对我来说,现在最大的困惑是我们怎样来创作,怎样找到自己,就像小文老师说的,
我们的身体是有听觉、视觉、触觉的,怎样来表达我们的身体呢?在科技如此发达的现代,科技让我们的触觉延伸到千里之外。

引子:编织的手

我想说我最初创作的手是用来编织的手,编织并不是单纯的一条线绕过另一条线,布需要每一条线来构造。编织对我来说是对社会的一种隐喻,是一种关系。所以这也是联系我们的手和空间的一种方式。(大屏幕上 [下图])这条红线,你们能看见它穿过布,这条线来到你的手边、你的胸前、你的膝盖前……当它退出布以外,它变得看不见,变得遥远,所以线条总是出现又消失、出现又消失……我认为这就是艺术家所做的,我们的责任就是使不一定能看得见的,或者是没有马上体会到的,能够被体会。


  

靠触觉去思考

 

可以谈论的最早一件作品,是把我的身体当做材料的一部分。这是一件西装,但是插满了牙签,这是我在读研究生的时候做的。我做好之后就不知道该把它怎么办了,有一个同学就说:“你把它穿上吧!”所以一个活人站立不动就成为了一件物品,而一件物品却被激活了,成为了一种触觉,这件作品改变了我的创作方式。



因为这件作品教会了我怎样靠触觉去思考。所以你总是应该好好听听你同学们的意见。我学到的一点,是我站在这个西装牙签套里面的每一分钟,都跟之前的感觉不一样。有一个问题到现在都还一直伴随着我,这个问题就是:
你怎样来创造一种环境,使别人也能够对你的感官经验有所参与。

 

这件作品:蜂蜜、绵羊与8000美金

 

现在我的作品的大小、尺寸已经改变了,它从一个人身体的大小扩大到一个建筑空间的大小。在旧金山的一个旧停车场,我创作了一个作品,我使用的材料就是这个作品的使用基金,8000美金。你们眼前所看见的,是流通货币中最小的单位,也就是“一分钱”。这些共计8000美金的一分钱就是这个地面的皮肤。我使用蜂蜜把它们在地面上覆盖起来,(隔壁的房间里还圈养着三只绵羊,)动物经济就和人类的经济结合起来,当你走进这个空间,你会看见地面是这种金黄的铜的,但是你却能闻到动物的气味。最后这些钱都会被清洗,清点,然后这些钱就用来邀请艺术家到这个地区来驻地创作。而一顶帽子和剩下的那些蜂蜜就是这个作品唯一剩下的。


触向不可知的手

 

许多年后,在另外一件作品中我又开始思考人和动物之间互相依靠的关系,它们共存于一个空间里,而这种“关系”并不能用语言来表达。这也就是徐冰老师刚才介绍说他印象深刻的那件作品。

当你走进这个空间来,你马上能意识到,你的脚下是一片马鬃毛的海洋,空气中弥漫着一种烟雾的味道,好像什么烧着了。如果想要来到“海洋”中间的那个人的身边,你就必须和这些材料——这些马鬃来打交道。马鬃毛记录着所有动物的记忆,所以这些马鬃上记录着一些细胞。但是作为人类,我们记录记忆的方式是通过写作。所以在这个桌子旁边,有一个人在读一本书。

这个人阅读的速度是根据他的手来确定的。在这个过程中,烙铁烙字飘出了烟,而烟雾又传到马鬃当中,语言就在你的手所能触及的范围之外。另外,这个空间中的那些窗户,飘来留声机的声音,而这非常美丽的声音,也恰恰在你所能触及的范围之外,因为它是沿着一个一个的窗户移动的。所以你朝着有光的窗户走去,试图用手去触摸它,因为我们习惯性地伸出手去触摸不懂的东西。在这个房间里面,你能感受到种种行走的“困难”。还是那只手,那只触向不可知的手,那只我创作的手,那只我编织的手。

流动的“静止”:湄公河上的冥想船

 

这件作品是在我没有办法说当地语言的情况下创作的。我受邀去老挝的一个城市创作,这是一个世界遗产城市,同时也存在着非常大的压力。这个压力一方面来自于它经济的发展,一方面是它世代相传的佛教文化传统。我们修了一条这样的用来冥想和散步的船,背后的想法就是“静止”其实可以在移动的湄公河上被寻找到。

这条船现在就在湄公河上面游荡,我并不担心他们是否继续在上面做冥想。当地的僧侣告诉我,安静不需要一个地方,不需要一个时间、一个地点,因为它是从内心发出来的。这就是他送给我的“礼物”。在那儿的最后一天,我又把这个船借回来,我的梦想之一就是把声音也带到这个河上去,所以我就找到了这些宫廷乐师,他们就在船上奏乐。就好像之前作品里面关于动物的气味和钱币所做的比较,这样的一个瞬间,对于我来说,是内心的平和。


一件作品往往给予你下一件作品的启示

 

我被邀请到古根海姆博物馆来做一个作品。我所关心的是怎样让翻译的一个作品处于完全失去语境的环境下,就像一块布里掉下来的线头没办法再把它织进另一块布里。所以我们把上百本的书切割之后又连起来。有一个小铃铛在四片小丝绸之间挂着,仅仅使用重力,这个小铃铛就从古根海姆博物馆内部的高层落下来。


这个小铃铛实际上并不比展馆里的噪音更响,但是它却产生了一种力量,当这个铃铛声音响起的时候,人们会聚到这个建筑的边缘来观看这个铃铛,我之前并不知道会产生这样的效果,这使我想到如何用作品让人们转过身来。当那个铃铛掉到最低处,它会把书撞下去,然后另外一位艺术家又把铃铛拉上来。这个作品,它总是在行动的过程中。从古根海姆博物馆的作品中,我也学到了另一点:因为它只有很少的一些地方是平的,所以你在往上走的过程中总是在寻找如何使身体平衡。我觉得它让你清醒过来,所以这件作品也使我想到怎样使身体动起来,然后再清醒过来。这个想法使我开始想到下一件作品。

 

狭窄空间的亲密感

 

这个塔是在旧金山修建的,它有八层楼。你可以看见它有一个互相对绕的旋转楼梯,作为行为艺术它可以使人们面对面。通常情况下,观众在一边,表演者在另一边,如果把表演者和观众放在一个非常狭窄的面对面的空间里会产生怎样的效果呢?塔底下是薄薄的一层水,水的对面是天空。对于我来说,这是第一次有机会创造一个建筑空间来给其他艺术家使用。它是一种室内空间,你必须弯下腰才能进来,这样你对来到这个入口会变得更加敏感,你会更有一种参与到一个事件当中来的意识。

声音,就像小文老师刚刚说到的,它是一种远方的触及,没有其他的方式可以比拟。至今为止,可能有12-15个艺术家在这里表演,这是连续不断的实验性的地方。想到那个空间带来的一种“亲密感”,它寂静而又遥远,你跟对面的人只有25公尺这个距离,但是你却又必须走到塔顶再整个绕下来才能到同一个地面。就像很多时候我们都是安静的阅读,但是当你读给另外一个人听的时候,就是一种亲密,因为通常会挨得很近或者是触及到那个人。我于是就想到,我要读给整个纽约市听。

 

公共空间里的亲密感:怎样读给整个纽约市听

 

我在想,怎样把这种亲密感传达给一个非常开放的公共空间。我能想到的解决方案就是,我要读给那些鸽子听。(我听说在北京有一种鸽子哨,你把它装在鸽子的身上,鸽子在飞翔的时候就会发出一种声音,如果在座有人能够有这方面的经验,麻烦跟我讲一下。)我们在俄亥俄州的一个农场来训练这些鸽子,然后把这些鸽子寄到纽约市,它们在纽约的新家是一个军械库,最初建造是作为防御使用。(如果换一种说法,这个建筑是因为恐惧而修建的。现在这个建筑物的一个功能是提供一种照顾,也有其他许多公共服务性的活动。)

我想把我找到的那种“温柔感”、“亲密感”带到这个空间里来,所以我想到的就是“接触”。我想象的就是怎样来创造一个空间,可以让人们相遇在那里。这个建筑的结构启发我觉得可以挂一些什么东西,我立刻想到从屋顶超过80公尺的高度挂下来这样一个秋千,因为我有这样一个认知:当你失去重力的时候,你的身心是打开的。我想创造一个空间,让每个人都有他自己的位置,所以我们创造了48个秋千,每个秋千都跟头顶上的结构联系在一起,并且每个秋千都有两根线连到中间挂的布那里,再跟那个布背面的秋千联系在一起。所以你如果在布的一边来荡秋千的话,你能够感觉到布背后的荡秋千的人的重量,尽管你没有办法通过声音或者是你的手来触碰到那个人。

因此,这些线的移动是根据人的动作来决定的。我发现,人们开始在中间这个布的下面躺下来,这是我始料未及的。我一开始就知道这是很重要的一个地方,因为它是正中间,又是边缘,但是它竟然变得好像沙滩一样,人们在这里躺下来,花数小时的时间,和陌生人就这样肩并肩的在这里躺下来,人真的因此变得开放。所以这件作品创造的的空间就好比一个“公园”,让我们很安静地相处在一起。


有两位读者在鸽子那里阅读,同时也倾听对方的阅读,在他们阅读的同时,通常有小孩子过来,这些孩子对大街上的鸽子完全没有注意,但是在这儿不一样。他们读的文字中间有这样一条线在正中间,他们可以从左到右来来回回的读或者是自己改变次序来读。他们读的声音就在这个小的放声机里面,放声机就用黄色的纸袋子这样包着,这就是我怎样读给纽约市听,因为声音在这个黄色的纸袋子里面,你可以把它随身带着在这个空间里面走,这就是我们能够怎样从远方读给别人听。

 

大家对这个黄色的纸袋子都非常的悉心,尽管在美国它就是很简单的午餐袋。有一天我看见一位听众把这个袋子抱在胸前,就好像抱小孩子一样,他实际上也创造了一个空间,可以和大家一起来接触,分享这样一个亲密的感觉。

  

布的另一端有一位作者在写信,这些信是写给空间里的物质的,比如说“亲爱的空气”,“亲爱的光线”。

 

你的确感觉到在公共空间里有这样一种感觉——一种柔软平和的感觉。

    

你愿意被看见

 

最后我想再讲一讲我过去几年一直在做的一个作品。这是一个平面材料,对方能看见你的那部分,就是你触碰到材料的那部分。我发现一种照相的方式使人变得又可以展示他的软弱,好比不断穿行的那条线它忽然出现在你面前又穿到背后。

关于这件作品很重要的一点是,你站在这个材料的背后,你没有办法,你什么也看不见。所以当你站在这个非常隐蔽的一个材料的背后,你唯一能够沟通的就是用声音来引导你,所以我站在这个材料的另外一边。然后我让材料背后的人转身或者是触碰这个材料。我认为你们在这儿所看见的就是人在倾听,愿意使自己被看见。

我事实上很早就知道,但是我不断地在发现每个人都很美。这样简单的一个特征,这个材料的特征就是保护你,使你隐蔽不可见,同时也使你曝光或者是来展现你。所以我们就在纽约艺术博览会上制作了这个作品,很多最后的成品是可以销售的,每个人都能够参与进来被照相,然后我们把每个人的照片打印出来,我们把他寄信另外某个人。你会你的邮箱里边收到某个人的一个照片。很快就出现一个这样的现象就是大家开始在Facebook上把这些照片晒出来,说谁知道这个人是谁吗?大家就开始认识对方了。

感知空间:竖起你头上的“天线”

    

陈小文:剩下这段时间,我们安排与听众的交流和互动。我和安坐在台上,大家有感兴趣的问题可以提出,我们在一起继续对话。我们也可以静静地交流。

观众:在创作的时候,是您发现了这些空间还是这些空间找到了您?    

    

汉密尔顿:关于这个问题我有两个回答:第一个回答是,在你既定的一个空间里面,怎样找到你想做的那件事。我能做到这一点唯一的一个方式,就是我在这个空间里面不停地、不停地行走,直到找到我想要做什么,就好比你把你的“天线”放起来去感知。你去感觉,去闻到底这个空间里面有一些什么。如果我不通过感官经验来认知一个空间的话,我是没有办法开始一个作品的。

 

但是你的问题似乎也在问最初怎样找到一个空间,我觉得通常它都是一种邀请。我通常在去认知这个空间之前,没有太多关于创作的想法。所以我从来没有先把一个作品想好,然后再去找这样一个空间。但是我非常喜欢大的空间,我觉得小空间是很难去创作的,因为我总是没有办法在小空间里面来来回回地找到和它们之间的关系。

If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

CAFA Art Museum Publication Authorization Agreement

I fully agree to CAFA Art Museum (CAFAM) submitting to CAFA for publication the images, pictures, texts, writings, and event products (such as works created during participation in workshops) related to me from my participation in public events (including museum member events) organized by the CAFA Art Museum Public Education Department. CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

Article II

Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.
