September 3, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, and the 94th anniversary of the "September 18th Incident" is also approaching. In this September of profound reflection on history, "A Heroic Ode to China – Retrospective Exhibition of Xu Xingzhi's Artistic Achievements", co-sponsored by the Chinese Artists Association and the Central Academy of Fine Arts, is set to open at CAFA Art Museum on September 18.
The film Children of Troubled Times, directed by artist Xu Xingzhi in 1935, takes the "September 18th Incident" as its creative background and narrative starting point. With film as the medium, it expresses hatred for Japanese invaders and concern for the nation's fate, while also demonstrating the indomitable spirit of the Chinese people in resisting Japanese aggression. Its theme song, March of the Volunteers (with lyrics by Tian Han and music by Nie Er), has inspired countless Chinese people to devote themselves to the great cause of resisting Japanese aggression and saving the nation. Eventually, this song became the national anthem of the People's Republic of China.

Xu Xingzhi (1904-1991) was a renowned Chinese artist, art historian and theorist, art educator, film and theater director and screenwriter, pioneer of the Left-wing art movement, literary and artistic warrior, member of the Council of the Chinese Artists Association, and professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Amid the fierce tides of China’s artistic transformation in the 20th century, Xu Xingzhi was like a polygonal prism, refracting the spectrum of his era into a richly variegated array of dimensions. With a palette in his left hand, he dissected the textures of the times; with a camera in his right, he recorded the heartbeat of the nation. He turned the theater stage into a battlefield for ideas and used the power of his literary pen to pierce through spiritual mists. As a standard-bearer of the Left-wing cultural movement, he unleashed extraordinary creativity across four dimensions—fine arts, film, theater, and literature. Moreover, in his roles as a literary and artistic theorist and art educator, he sowed the seeds of revolution into the soil of New China.
This project is part of the "A Century of Glory · Renowned Artists" exhibition series hosted by the Central Academy of Fine Arts. As the largest and most comprehensive retrospective exhibition of Xu Xingzhi's artistic achievements to date, this exhibition will showcase more than 400 pieces/groups of Xu Xingzhi's representative works and precious documents, many of which are being exhibited for the first time. It will present his outstanding accomplishments in multiple fields—including painting, art history, literature, film, and theater—in an all-round, multi-dimensional, and in-depth manner. We invite you to step into the spiritual world of this 20th-century interdisciplinary master. Through these precious exhibits, you will feel Xu Xingzhi's unceasing artistic exploration and comprehend the spiritual context of the development of modern Chinese art.
