In 1971, Michel Foucault delivered an important lecture on Manet in Tunisia and commented on 13 of his paintings. Though not especially well-known to the public, the lecture is of great significance. In 2001, Maryvonne Saison brought together a group of Foucault specialists and art historians to review this lecture based on studies of Manet in the past three decades. This book includes Foucault’s lecture scripts and some essays written by the scholars at the2001 conference.
