Following the exhibition of “Western paintings”, the CAFA Art Museum staged the exhibition of Chinese paintings created in the period of National Beiping Art School and documented these works in a catalog. As the earliest state-owned art school in China, in the face of the impact of western modern education system and amidst the special historical context where many teachers had studied abroad, the National Beiping Art School has never been able to chart clearly its complicated historical shift from “paintings to nation” to “painting to knowledge”. Themed on “Fragmented Shadow of Painting”, this exhibition attempts to tease out the fragments of the history of painting at the National Beiping Art School, at a time when historical literature, collection, and basic research are absent.
