Sound Performance: Crowdsourcing from the Internet
A video of a snoring hummingbird went viral online, which makes it possible for us to see a phenomenon that has never been observed before. This is a surprise that a Peruvian ornithological research institute in studying hummingbird sleep patterns. Scientists explained this: hummingbirds have to forage every 15 minutes on average, which makes it impossible for them to have a normal rest or sleep. Therefore, hummingbirds must minimize physical exertion. As for the snoring sound, it is made by the hummingbird inhaling the air when it stays awake.
On YouTube, this rare yet interesting video of "snoring hummingbird" has been played 3,257,932 times. Based on the observation and verification, the natural science has achieved sustained development, allowing us to explain many natural phenomena. However, we cannot truly get rid of the "anthropic principle " - the sad fate of understanding the world with human consciousness and wisdom. The fact it reflects is alarming: when we look at nature, we always proceed from the arrogant human perspective by regarding everything around us as mere objects and "the other."
By reviewing Darwin's theory of evolution and other historical literature, we can find that the theory and methodology of natural science are all based on the assumptions of humanity. We believed that "Homo sapiens" are the only wise species on Earth – they have no siblings or parents, but they have learned to collaborate with each other and create tools. As a result, these actions and activities have had a significant impact on the earth. Therefore, the current era is also called the "Anthropocene."
On the one side of the exhibition hall, the snoring sound of hummingbirds represents nature - it always surprises us, but at the same time proves our ignorance. On the other side of the hall, a pillow-shaped speaker box keeps playing the sound recording, introducing the "Anthropocene" theory in natural science, more like hypnotic whisper and self-talk. The exhibition plays the two sounds at the same time and space as a way to interpret some of the paradoxes in human consciousness.
