During the graduation exhibition of CAFA’s graduates in 2017, the Public Education Department of the CAFA Art Museum launched a series of workshops for the graduate students’ graduation exhibition in order to promote the art museum education project of “Gao Can Xiao”, meaning “Universities Participating in the Development of Primary Schools”, and disseminate and popularize the works and ideas of the graduate students’ graduation exhibition to the public. The workshops of “Black and White Self-expression” and “Experiencing Color Painting on Rock” were respectively held in the public education area of the CAFA Art Museum at 14:30-16:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, and at 14:00-16:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 27.
The workshop of “Black and White Self-expression” invited Dang Pei, a postgraduate student of the Mural Painting Department of CAFA, as the workshop tutor. She learned from professor Wu Yi and had long engaged in the development and exploration of mural art in the contemporary era. Dang Pei brought her graduation work, “The Work is You.”Combing with the works in this graduate students’ graduation exhibition, she presented this theme in the workshop, hoping to deepen the public’s understanding of the works through the workshop and promote the diversity of art at the same time. The workshop of “Experiencing Color Painting on Rock ”invited Gan Yu, a teacher currently teaching at the School of Urban Planning of CAFA, also graduated from the Department of Experimental Art of CAFA in 2007 with a Master’s degree. She had long paid attention to the inheritance and development of the rock color painting and explored the art language of rock color painting with the combination of the development of modern art.
Both the two workshops gave priority to the children over eight years old in the recruitment of students. More than 40 children from several primary schools around CAFA participated in the workshops, while some parents and adults also took part in the activities. In the studio of “Black and White Self-expression,”Dang Pei combined the theme of the workshop to encourage the students to draw on the white paper with the black fine point pen. After that, she let the students cut off the favorite part, filling it with color or further enriching the picture with black and white color. That inspired the children in the art creation to release their creative passion and enhance their imagination in art.
“Experiencing Color Painting on Rock” was led by the tutor Gan Yu. She selected the auspicious and concise animal images in the Chinese rock cave murals to let the students, by imitating these images, feel the pleasure of traditional Chinese painting and the artistic spirit.
Both the two tutors said that they had gained much experience from the workshops. From Dang Pei’s works, we realize that “black and white” was one of the easiest ways of communication, and the works also emphasized the interaction and contact between art and the audience. She hoped to deepen the audiences’understanding of her graduation work through the workshop. She said “my works mainly emphasize the sense of artistic form. I have different ideas in each painting, and the contents also have different meanings for different audiences so that the viewers could find themselves in it”. Gan Yu attached great importance to the workshop activity. She said, “the Public Education Department of the art museum built a bridge for the general public with art. Artworks are not only exhibited to view, but also creative works of ordinary things. The theme of the activity that I led was ‘Experiencing Color Painting on Rock,’Rock color painting was very unfamiliar to the public, but it was inherited from the art of the Han and Tang dynasties, and it could be said to be the essence of ancient Chinese painting. I hope the public would understand the beauty of rock color panting through this workshop and have better insights into different Chinese paintings. Art education should spread the truth, the good and the beautiful to the public. CAFA Art Museum provided the platform, and I’d like to contribute to it.”
The two workshops were welcomed and loved by the children. They were fully involved in the activities, showing a colorful side of the children’s art. The workshops not only let the children gain happiness and knowledge but also inspired their creativity and imagination. At the same time, it also improved the audiences’understanding of the graduation exhibition of the CAFA, as well as the recognition and reception of the artists and their works.
Zhang Zikang, the director of the CAFA Art Museum, also personally experienced the workshop. The activity was well received by the participants. The public expressed their love for the graduate work exhibition in their way, showing the most beautiful presentation in their eyes.
