In order to better publicize and popularize art education to the public, and bring more people to the museum, the CAFA Art Museum holds a series of public education activities with the undergraduates’ graduation exhibition in 2017. On June 17, 2017, 15 children took part in “The Mystery of the Body” held by the children’s workshop at the public education area of the museum at 10: 00-12: 00 a.m.
Among the graduation works of the undergraduates this year, many works were about “life” and “body” which involved of descriptions related to elements like the bones, organs, blood, and body parts. This workshop invited Song Xinlei, who graduated from the CAFA and had long devoted himself to art education, as well as his team, to lead the children to feel the artistic beauty of human body, and understand the structure of bones and epidermis, and their relationship with movement and body languages from the perspective of visual art.

First of all, the tutors took the children to visit the graduation show and interpreted the works that related to the theme. Then, the workshop activities were divided into several sections such as “my action”, “my body” and “my clothes”. In the section of “my action”, the children have to work together to complete the “draft” of the body, with one child posing on the drawing paper, and then another one depicting and printing the outline of the body.
Then, in the section of “my body”, the bones made according to children’s understanding were stuck to the black card paper, which showed various movements when the bones were undergoing different changes. The most popular section was “my clothes”. The children dressed the skeleton structures and defined their ideal “identities” by drawing the clothes in different styles, different professions, and different colors. These colorful clothes were cute and hilarious, showing the dreams of each child. In this section, parents also actively participated in the activity. Some parents even accompanied their children to play the game from the beginning to the end. Many parents said that the activity was of great educational significance. They not only experienced and appreciated the graduation works of the CAFA students, but also let their children deepen the understanding of “themselves” in the process of teaching through vigorous activities.

Around the discussions of this graduation exhibition on the subjects like “people, life, structure and appearance, and the relationship between me and my skins”, Teacher Song, who in charge of the workshop this time, introduced that the activity was inspired by these works. For example, a work titled Me and Me showed three states of three girls. It was a dialogue between themselves and their shadows, through meditation and listening to themselves, so that the true self could awake. This work could encourage children to feel and face themselves. Regarding the work People Who Live in Clothes, the artists let children understand that clothes were only superficial things and the human mind is more important, by expressing that people’s clothing, namely, dresses, was a carrier. While the work of A Man and a Woman was discussed from the personal ontology. The body bone structure in the X-ray plate is void of the specific images, identities, characters and so on, which enable the viewer to forget people’s social properties and consider only from the human physiological structure. The selection of this work could let the children understand that everyone is structurally supported and that human structure is also a beautiful work of art from a medical point of view.

The outstanding works of the CAFA students provided rich materials and ideal space for the public education activities. At this time, it not only brought children artistic experiences but also improved their self-emotional cognition. That also reflected the development and innovation of the art museum in public education, through which the public could better participate in and experience the charm of art.
