An Exclusive Interview with Cao Qinghui: Talk About “National Beiping Art School (Western Painting)” Exhibition

记者:曹老师,您好!此次您做为“国立北平艺专(西画部分)这个展览的学术主持,您自身是怎么看待这个展览的?

曹庆晖:中央美术学院美术馆本身有很多藏品,但外界了解不多,这次借“2012年全国美术馆馆藏精品展出季”这个项目机会,王璜生馆长特别有针对性地将馆藏中可以归属到国立北平艺专沿革链条上的西画作品,策划为独立的展览,向社会公开。其实,这些藏品中有不少是入藏之后的首次亮相,别说是外界了,就在美术学院内部来说,一些多年执教于此的老先生也感慨第一次见到这些作品。这就反映出了一个问题,这个问题也涉及到对美术馆职能的理解,就是藏品如何从秘藏状态,说得不好听一些,是如何从尘封状态中解放出来,用之于社会和研究,以实现其收藏价值和发挥美术馆在文化建设方面无可替代的作用。我们发现,随着这两年北京各主要美术场馆这方面意识的加强和实际工作的推进,在不少研讨会上所见到的老先生们对首次目睹的感慨和感动的表达,其实也正反映出目前业界这样一种重视藏品和文献的进步。

在筹备这个展览的过程中,面对这些老画儿,我个人既惊喜又遗憾。惊喜的是,有些画居然还在人间,比如像李毅士、吴法鼎这些早期留学生在上世纪20年代完成的人物肖像《陈师曾像》、《王梦白像》、《旗装妇女》,像徐悲鸿的学生艾中信40年代创作的《枕戈达旦》等,很长一段时间我们不知道这些画的下落,像《枕戈达旦》在艾中信年表里都已标为毁于文革了,这一次重新被整理和发现,不能不令人感到惊喜。遗憾的是,目前的藏品无法描述一个比较完整的国立北平艺专沿革史,大多数曾在艺专任教的艺术家都没有留下任何作品,因此而带来的一个比较强烈的感受就是深感我们这一代从业者的责任重大,怎样尽可能地增补曾经在中央美院前身工作过的有影响的艺术家的作品,是一个任重而道远的路程。目前看来,由于存在市场这个交易出口,作品征集难度也大大增大。在做这个展览的过程中,我切实感到国家有关部门和学校需要尽快形成具有中国特色的良性捐赠机制,以有利于美术馆征集作品,让艺术家把好的作品放在美术馆保存、展览和研究,否则在征集方面会越来越困难。这些实际上都是基础工作,不管是做研究还是美术馆的收藏,首先都要把基础工作做好。据目前展览的反馈信息来看,大家反映都还不错,认为这个展览做的很精致,这实际上也给予了我们一种鼓舞。我们也计划在明年春召集一个学术研讨会,推动一些更深入的研究。

记者:除了研讨会,此次展览的后续活动计划还有哪些呢?

曹庆晖:起初的构想是做馆藏的国立北平艺专绘画作品,不光是西画,还包括中国画,但是考虑到展览内容的相对单纯和脉络的相对清晰,策展人最终选择将西画和中国画分开展示,先做西画部分,待日后再做中国画部分。这是其一。其二,一个好展览会有更进一步的衍生品开发,目前美术馆已经开始和出版机构合作,希望从美育普及的角度,开发适合3-12岁的宝宝看珍品的幼儿读物,试图通过编儿歌和编故事以及艺术地选择藏品画面,引领双休日来馆参观的父母和孩子进入到一个相对容易理解的藏品世界。第三从专门研究的角度来说,后续的,其实也是长期的活动计划,一方面要积极地有计划地征集作品,另一方面要深入地有计划地展开研究,目前我们的工作重心是在展览开幕后,将包含藏品以及大量历史文献的展览画册做好,我们以为没有永恒的展览,但有永恒的阅读,若干年后人们是通过阅读出版物来了解有关展览的,因此王璜生馆长和我对于这本画册的编辑、设计和出版比较在意。待画册出版后,我们将开展一系列讲座,当然也包括我上面说的学术研讨会,希望能够推动一些崭新的、深入的研究成果涌现出来。

记者:这次展览主要以“北平艺专(西画部分)”为主,那西画相较于其他画科,比如像中国画之类,在北平艺专这部分历史中处于一种什么位置?

曹庆晖:美术教育在这一百多年的引进和变化中,西画师资是主要力量,民国时期专门美术教育主要是面向日本和法国学习,美术教育的体制是西画的体制,西画所处的位置也就显而易见。无论是公立还是私立它的位置都很突出。一般情况下,西画和中国画是分开设科的,但也有学校,比如国立杭州艺专一批留法回来的老师本着中西融合的思路,不再分立西洋画系和中国画系,而统称为绘画系,目的是为了中西融合,但在实际过程中,课程的设置都有利于西画,绘画系就演变成西画系。我想说的是,民国时期美术教育的外来教学体制更适于西画的引进和发展,目前我们所看到的藏品差不多也都是留学生及留学生的学生完成的。

记者:北平艺专这所学校的历史是较为复杂的,而目前能够确认的属于这部分西画师生只有十几个人,油画遗存大约是40幅左右,遗存作品的数量与这所学校的三十年的历史相比是不成比例的,您认为这其中的原因是什么?

曹庆晖:从历史方面来说,主要跟这个学校频繁的变动有关系。这个学校从1918年初创后就历经过几次停办,这对一个学校的连续办学来说当然不是什么好事。此外,20世纪上半叶的中国战乱频仍,时局不稳,这些也不利于一个学校的稳定发展。我们现在所看到的收藏主要是徐悲鸿和他的学生的作品,此前的收藏很少。但这里面有这么一个事实,就是我们会以为学校初创期应该不会留下什么作品,但却还留下了李毅士和吴法鼎的作品,相反,我们认为学校后期应该留下不少作品,但其实欠缺很多,而这些作品之所以留下来也有各种各样的机缘,但具体的收藏流转过程并不十分清楚。我自己那篇文章《主流、主流及其他》用了“西画”和“油画”两个概念,我说油画只有40幅左右的意思是说能够归到北平艺专师资名下的油画就只有40幅上下,并不是说中央美术学院馆藏民国油画只有这么多,我们馆藏中还有李叔同、司徒乔等人的油画作品,但由于他们在历史上没有和北平艺专发生过什么关系,因此也就不能入展这个展览。另外,我说“西画”是因为馆藏除了油画之外还有水彩和粉画,如果要用“西画”这个概念,那么北平艺专的藏品量会直线上升,因为仅矢崎千代二这么一位被徐悲鸿聘为国立北平艺专讲师的日本画家一人就有千余幅粉画保存在中央美院。此外,这里面还有一个情况是,藏品中有些是画家履职期间完成的,有些则不是。比如像李毅士《陈师曾》、《王梦白》两幅作品是1920年所画,很明确这是他任职北京美术学校期间所画。而像吴作人是在1946年才跟随徐悲鸿过来当教务长的,但藏品却是他在比利时留学期间30年代所画,并非国立北平艺专任职时完成。目前来说,现在留下来的作品遗存量和在1918-1949年间进出北平艺专到师资人数来比较的话,显然是一个很小的比例。如果我们把从1919年到1949年这30年进出北平艺专沿革史上的西画师资名单梳理下来,那个数量显然不是十几个人的规模,因此我们对征集作品的呼吁和努力,显然也不是一蹴而就的事情。

记者:在您自己进行关于“北平艺专”这部分研究的过程中,您觉得最大的困难或者难点是在哪?

曹庆晖:目前在这方面的研究我觉得还是不够明晰。比如像李毅士,说他去格拉斯哥美术学院留学,但到底是跟谁学的却不知道。除了一些重要艺术家,像徐悲鸿、吴作人等人的留学情况还有一些材料外,许多留学生的留学情况我们根本不清楚。这也是一个瓶颈,主要由于材料不够丰满。近代以来,我们连续向法国、日本、苏联、美国学习,但是我们对留学生在外学习的第一手材料却储备不足。这也是一个基础工作,我们做的也不够好。这方面我们不及日本学者,我们这次在编画册附录“国立北平艺专师资名单”时,主要还是参考日本学者鹤田武良调查的师资名单,在这个基础上补充了一些他没有找到名单。除了第一手材料之外,还有一个视觉材料亏欠的问题,也就是说我们并不了解留学生当年留学师承的老师原作情况,这样往往会发生自以为是的情况。比如李毅士留学的格拉斯哥美术学院,那时候是一种什么样的艺术氛围,有过什么样的老师,他受到什么样的影响,这些都不清楚。如果我们知道了他的老师是谁,我们就会对李毅士建立起更明确的联系,就会知道在那个时候他是受到了什么样的潮流影响。像徐悲鸿先生我们了解比较多一点,但是对徐悲鸿的老师达仰的了解就非常模糊,许多留学生的师承情况我们的了解都是有名无实,并不清楚他们的老师艺术人生和风格变化的详细情况。这样的话,留学生们到底引进了什么?哪些方面有自己的进展?往往在认识上是是是而非、模棱两可的。因此,要整合资源,加强档案文献的搜集整理,加强对外交流和合作,我们一定要争取看得见、摸得着,不能总是隔着窗户纸去想象。

记者:您自己也在这个展览的基础上进行了一些学术研究,那么在研究方面您觉得今后应当努力的方向是什么?

曹庆晖:杭州那边治校史的工作做的比较好,这通过出版物就可以看出来。今年上海美专百年纪念展出版的档案材料也非常扎实,我们也需要这样努力。就学校本身来说,民国时期的北京不仅只有一个国立北平艺专,还有其他私立美术学校或者综合大学的美术系科,这些机构共同构成民国画坛的生态关系。除了要了解北平艺专,还要了解其他学校、社团的情况,这样点和面才能立起来,才能在面上更清楚地看待北平艺专这个案例。另一方面还要加强北平艺专自己的纵深研究,目前而言我们相对熟悉一些的是徐悲鸿1946年重办艺专的情况,但是更早的情况就相对模糊,特别是有两个方面,一是北平沦陷后在日伪统治下的艺专情况,还有就是学校创建后的早期情况,至今我们还没有一份比较详细的北京美术学校、北京美术专门学校的教职员名单。我想这需要发挥集体的力量,通过和南京、北京的档案馆以及北京大学方面进行一些沟通和合作,把北平艺专的沿革梳理得更详实和准确一些。

记者:北平艺专这部分的历史也与我们学校自身的历史息息相关,但到今天为止才将这部分收藏进行整理、研究和做成展览展出,您认为这其中的原因是什么?

曹庆晖:这有各方面的原因。首先,做这种工作需要硬件跟得上,如果没有现代化的美术馆,没有现代化的画库,这方面的推进就会受到条件制约。其次,是需要馆长、策展人历史研究意识到位,如果没有这样的意识,有一百个美术馆也没有用。第三,是国家文化项目的支持,我们这个展览原本就是项目成果。做这种展览,必须是人力、物力和意识都到位才能做好,我们目前只是坚定的迈出了第一步。

记者:在您的研究文章《主流、主流及其他》中,提到不能忽视北平艺专沿革史上日本留学生的功绩,但中央美术学院美术馆馆藏却无一件留日画家的藏品,这其中的原因是什么?

曹庆晖:现在情况有些小变化,目前我们馆里有一件宋步云家属送回的馆藏品《白皮松》,宋步云是留日的,他当年留学东京的私立日本大学。当年留日的主要流向集中在东京和京都的美术学校,在京都的留学生相对要少,像陈树人、郑锦都出身于京都,大部分留学日本学西画的中国青年都希望进入东京美术学校,相对在东京美术学校的中国留学生也比较多一些,比较著名的像李叔同、王悦之、卫天霖、许幸之等等,都是东京美术学校毕业生。目前馆藏品中严重匮乏留日艺术家的作品,这是一个事实,但北平艺专历史上和日本关系更密切这也是基本事实,这两个事实之间严重不对应,其中的原因可能比较复杂。其实这个问题和那天开新闻发布会时有老先生提出的怎么没有李瑞年、怎么没有韦启美,其实差不多,事实上就是没有,但是为什么没有,只能回到历史中去寻找原因吧。不过,我觉得与其追问原因,不如切实努力征集藏品,亡羊补牢未为晚矣。

记者:在展览中展出的十个左右的西画师生都是留学生以及留学生的学生,那么在近代美术史研究中,关于留学生这部分的研究整体上目前是处在一个什么状态?

曹庆晖:从目前硕博士研究论文来看,主要呈现两个方面。一方面是对这种留学群体开始关注了,比如像“留法群体”、“留学比利时群体”,但是群体关注相对比较表层,而专门研究涉及到艺术家个案的时候,又没有把留学与艺术家联系起来,只是当做艺术家的一种经历进行描述,研究深入度不足。做留学生研究这方面的工作对语言有要求,最好是有多重语言背景的人来做,希望将来有条件更好的同学加入我们的研究工作中。

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
