马克·奎恩:人类的“皮相”与“皮相之下”都岌岌可危

2019年3月8日, “马克・奎恩:皮相之下” 于中央美术学院美术馆开幕。展览呈现了著名英国艺术家马克・奎恩(Marc Quinn)的一系列作品,作为同时代中最具代表性的艺术家之一,奎恩的作品不断反复探索了艺术与科学、人体、情感以及对美的认知的主题。本次展览是艺术家首个在中国的美术馆级的展览,共带来奎恩跨越三十年艺术生涯中的多个系列作品,研究他长期关注的身份认同的主题。以下是“凤凰艺术”为您带来的评论报道。


1988年,一群年轻的英国艺术家在伦敦东部的一个仓库里展示了他们的前卫艺术,在国内外引起了强烈的反响。9年后,在皇家艺术学院举办了一场名为《感觉》(Sensation)的展览,吸引了30多万名观众。其中,参展艺术家就包括了马克·奎恩(Marc Quinn)。

但是,马克·奎恩并非yBa(Young British Artists—英国当代青年艺术家的简称)的成员之一——无论是艺术家本人,亦或是本次展览策展人王春辰,都在接受“凤凰艺术”的专访中陈述了这一事实。但是,这并不妨碍在这场占据了美术馆三层最大展厅的展览,共被划分了十个单元来呈现马克·奎恩在近三十年创作中的复杂性。

首先是一滴血、一块肉,是一张虹膜、一片印记,然后是一片面包、一具身体......在展场散发着面包香气的空间中,在对于马克·奎恩的记忆中,那些血肉的种种细节被直呈在观者眼前——即便本次在央美展出的作品并不那么“血腥”,但那些貌似平淡实则变异中显出的大恐怖,仿若平地惊雷,将眼前所见与那些生与死中奇怪而冷酷的事实和生命中的极端怪异联一起,构成了这个场域中“人”的错综幽暗。而这些萦绕在场域间的丝线彼此缠绕着,共同织就了一条更为幽深、更为广袤的脉络——生命(Life)。

Q:充满争议性对艺术家来说意味着什么?

A:艺术是有关我们现在生活的世界,一些人喜欢一些人不喜欢,你只需要做你该做的。

 

在某种程度上,即便马克·奎恩已并不年轻,但他仍保持着独属于英国那一时代的激情与反叛,并时刻保持着与当下信息化、碎片化的混沌现代主义时代相碰撞的大胆,以及用身体的各个角度对于“后人类”时代不停断地进行试验与质疑。

与理性自身的疯狂相比,失去理性的疯狂根本不算什么。即便奎恩最为知名的作品《self》(血头)因种种原因未能成行,但这并不妨碍观者意识到马克·奎恩对于“生命”无限延展的探索与重组。伤健人士的身体、狂野怒放的植物,怪异硕大的比例、鲜艳欲滴的色彩,这些令人匪夷所思的元素用一种优雅的形态表现出来,以科学家式的一丝不苟态度,哲人般质疑着人类最基本的存在问题。

在展览现场,那些身体细节都似曾相识,又让人感到可怕与陌生。如果说千年来的世界所背负的牢笼一直在被打破与加固,那么在马克·奎恩身上,我们便是看到了他在时代间隙的种种尝试:打破了对于单一媒介的崇拜的权威,打破了对于人类肉体规范的权威,打破了自然法则的权威,打破了爱、道德、技术与信息......在此时,那些破碎的对象似乎暗示着人主体的消逝,但却恰恰相反——人的主体从没有像现在这样存在过。

Q:外在世界一直在变化,那么人自身变化了吗?

A:没有。人类还是当年在洞穴里画动物的那个人。

 

在某种程度上,这些作品每一件都造就了与过去的决裂。无论是DNA肖像,还是将身体内的碳元素取出炼成钻石,亦或是将指纹和虹膜不断地拉扯放大并嵌进来自未来的召唤,它们都描述了这样一种状态:在人类还未准备好的时候 ,种种尚未被普遍接受的新事物以创伤性的方式侵入了这个领域。于是,在全新的后创伤主体与他的旧身份之间不存在任何连续性,而新的主体在震撼之后就浮现出来,并带给观者另一种震撼。

《我们与星星的化学构造并无二致》(We Share Our Chemistry with the Stars)(2009)一系列的巨型作品将人眼的虹膜扩大到抽象的程度,虹膜的个体性和人眼的象征意义使每个作品成为个体身份的微观图。奎恩的《迷宫》(Labyrinth)系列(2011 年至今)中放大的指纹同样模糊了抽象和比喻形式之间的界限,其中个体身份被简化为一种图案。这些作品反映了奎因对肖像创作的持续热情,这些肖像不仅仅是一个人的形象,也是他们身份的实际的视觉索引。

在这一点上马克·奎恩的艺术是一以贯之的——就是“人”。这个“人”不是传统意义上的人文主义的人,这里面有统一性也有矛盾性。我们作为这个时代的人怎么重新去看待人、人的生命。这个并不是古典艺术,但也不因为现代主义对于叙事的消解,而失去它在当今的意义。

千百年来,人与世界的割裂往往在此浮现:我们常常将皮毛和血肉的一小片当作了物本身,而在肉体的一切物质性当中,就是“物自身”,而不是另一维度的幽灵式显现;而如果说眼睛因其构造成为了人体唯一一个外部可见的内部器官:“瞳孔是我们内心世界通向外界的窗口——心灵的窗户和光照进来的地方,是外界与我们的神经系统相交之处;透过瞳孔可以窥见我们单一色彩的皮相之下生动的内部世界。”那么,在本次展览中,那些幽灵般早已深深嵌入在物质世界中的种种斑驳的绚烂,无不在提醒着我们:如果将某人的身体作为一个艺术媒介,外貌的转变可以改变一个人的身份;反之,皮相之下的存在也会被毫无保留地揭露出来。

Q:你有宗教信仰吗?

A:我没有。

在刚刚过去的2018年,基因编辑与生物密码成为举世焦点,人们想象着肉体与技术的结合会给肉体带来更加美好的未来,在对自然规律进行改写的同时,而不必承担伦理与宗教悬置的风险。同时,对于性别、种族和身材的讨论也同样滑入了政治正确的困境之中。自巴别塔倒下后,这似乎成为了全人类再次共同面临终极问题的又一危机。马克·奎恩自称不信仰任何宗教,但他作品中的普世性、精神性,甚至是神圣性,却在时代的巨浪下提供着属于自己的某种坚硬和判断。

于是 ,尽管在形式上都是“人”的躯体或器官,但这并不意味着我们就可以将马克·奎恩的作品仅仅限定于“肉身”和“皮相”的层面,否则便会成为一种“皮相之见”。正如展览的名称“皮相之下”,也在邀请着观者去探寻那血与肉、器官与身体细节的交织下,隐藏于隐秘深处的事物——皮相之下,是骨相、是精气神,亦是人存于世所的那一点灵光。

而对于如今这个被技术席卷的混沌现代主义时代来说,也许源自二十世纪中叶的“赛博朋客”(cyberpunk)的观点仍然历久弥新:我们无比需要在科技的裹挟中关注人类自身与肉体本身——这个人类进行任何行为必须使用的“媒体”,而抛弃肉身性的纯粹交流或许并不能构成一个完整的“人”。就如在梅洛-庞蒂看来,人的肉身不只是客观存在的事物、科学研究的对象,而且是一种体验的永恒条件,一种感知外在世界的结构,有意识的视觉经验和身体体验的必备要素。

在当代社会的日常实践中,这似乎更是一种背反:网络、虚拟现实与技术让人逐渐脱离客观与肉体社会,转而沉浸在非实体的行动模式中。然而,随之而来的生存困境却带来了人们重新对于自身肉体的强烈关注与再次认知。同时,身体,这一肉体性的,在古代与精神性对立的所谓“皮囊”,在如今的当代社会,却与精神性和神圣性在某种程度上合而为一,以非格式化的“偶发性”共同对抗着异化的外部世界——个人独特的、实打实存在的、标志着我之所以为我,人之所以为人的肉体,在艺术创作与生活中被凸显的尤为重要。

但是,这也同样并不意味着肉体被萎缩为一种价值载体而成为无关紧要的东西——虽然基因剪辑者与赛博朋客们确实将肉体视作可以被随意更改、替换的“零件”,并认为隐藏其中的灵魂才是重要的。譬如,技术诺斯替教者(Tech-gnostics)向我们许诺:通过把我们的大脑连接到机器上,我们将进入后人类(post-human)时代,并回到堕落之前的天使般的状态,与此同时,人的身体则会被还原为由克隆技术生产出来的外在工具。

然而,如果说眼前之血肉是弥漫在世间的种种幻象,但它并非是枷锁和负担,或许更是真实本身。就像是在黑格尔那里,一旦除去所有的幻觉,你也将失去真实本身——因为真实需要时间来洞穿幻觉并彰显自身。

肉体不在,人何以为人?无论是面包,还是身体破碎内部与外部的组成,都是生命得以延续的必备条件。对于它们的改造则隐喻着某种程度的创伤。可以说,奎恩的作品不仅是代表了一个个具体的个体对象,还代表了普遍意义上的人类自身。外部世界对于人体自身、感知方式与精神状态的创伤性刺痛是如此的强烈,在此时,关注肉体也就是在关注人类的命运共同体。

Q:你是个宿命论者吗?

A:不,我不是。我是个积极主义者。

人们常说,我们的命运早就已经写在手上。艺术家贯彻这种思路于 1991 年创造了他首个《面包手》(Bread Hands)雕塑系列,他将自己的手放在面包上重复勾画手部的外型与掌纹,创造出一个能够表达他身体特征的图案。即使奎因根据同一只手制成所有这一系列作品,但每一件《面包手》都是独一无二的,呈现了我们命运的变幻莫测。在《皮相之下》的展览中,艺术家再次引用这个概念,创造一个兼具协作性和参与性的艺术装置,邀请观者在美术馆的窑内制作自己的面包手,血肉之躯都一样殊途同归。这不仅反映了生命的无常,还同时展示了时间和外在力量如何扭曲我们的肉体和记忆。

于是,在《歧路之园》这件作品中,艺术家和其他参与者集体协作,在经过烤制之后,肉体被外在世界所异化了,同样异化的还有这一肉体的命运——手掌上的那些纹路沟沟壑壑、深深浅浅、杂乱清晰,冥冥之中的选择、未知和偶然,或让人觉得混乱,感到恐慌;或让人兴致勃勃,努力从中挖掘秩序。

那么,面对这个打破了社会生活与自我认识之前提的美丽新世界,人类仿佛悬崖边的飞鸟,该如何与之相处?而就像齐泽克所说,甚至当思想与意识的斗争将不再以宣传与论辩的形式展开,而是通过神经生物学的手段来达成时,我们的“皮相”与“皮相之下”同样岌岌可危。



Q:你觉得人最大的弱点是什么?

A:我不知道,如果我知道了,可能自己就创造了一个宗教。

奎恩曾说过,艺术是与物质世界和它不断变化的能量以及情感和思想的非物质世界的结合,而我们本就是活生生的历史与世界自身。因此,马克·奎恩的作品不仅关乎“皮相”,关乎肉体现实,关乎“皮相之下”那广袤的时代烙印,更再次指向了这种时代的墨轮如何又塑造、挤压了肉体——即“人”自身。艺术家一直试图在作品中展示这一点:事实上,只有那些破碎的或是放大的局部才能提醒人们世界与人类早已异化至此——还有什么比人自身更能反映人呢?——而观者也确实可以通过作品完成某种回溯:

而就如和博尔赫斯《歧路之园》有着异曲同工之妙的《列子》“杨朱歧路亡羊”中所说:歧路之中又有歧焉,吾不知所之,所以反也——每条岔路的中间又有岔路,我们不知道要往哪条路走,所以只好回来了。而当人类演变的巨涛扑来,那些复杂却难辨的种种驳杂位于道路两侧时,哪怕我们有着不同的身份、身体、面貌,不同的手、血、DNA,在皮相与皮相之下,我们的血液或许在共同呼唤着一个声音:倒退着走向未来。

回到崇高、回到价值、回到尊重。回到你,回到我,回到肉体,回到“人”。

If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

CAFA Art Museum Publication Authorization Agreement

I fully agree to CAFA Art Museum (CAFAM) submitting to CAFA for publication the images, pictures, texts, writings, and event products (such as works created during participation in workshops) related to me from my participation in public events (including museum member events) organized by the CAFA Art Museum Public Education Department. CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

Article II

Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.
