With Niki de Saint Phalle’s exhibition l’amoureuse taking place in Today Art Museum in Beijing, anthropologist and researcher Melanie Gourarier gave a lecture on the artist’s relationship with love at CAFA Art Museum.
Niki de Saint Phalle, as a significant female and feminist artist of the 20th century, is known for works such as Nanas and Tirs (Shootings). As a versatile artist, she worked on sculptures, installations, conceptual arts and even paintings. According to Ms Gourarier, without understanding how her life, work and love relationships influence each other, it would be difficult to understand the artist’s oeuvre.
Presenter: Prof. Shao Yiyang, Deputy Dean at School of Humanities, CAFA
Ms Gourarier began her lecture by showing two works from the Nanas series, created by Niki since 1960s. While the world usually judges Nanas as a jolly, festive, and even superficial work by its rich colors and enormous size, Ms Gourarier suggested that we should actually look further into the dark elements hidden behind these joyous female figures. Hidden in the details of Nanas are broken dolls, fake flowers, spiders and plastic snakes - suggesting that her works are far from what we imagined a group of happy, cosy female characters, but quite the contrary. What’s more, Nanas’ bodies are mellow, with exaggerated body curves and unproportionately small heads . This demonstrates her intention to weigh emotion over reason.
While Niki’s works convert the power-relationship between female and male, Mr Gourarier believes that Niki has been carrying on this fight since her childhood. Niki wanted to rebel against her conservative family, composed of French nobles and American bourgeoisie, and chose her own lifestyle by eloping with her childhood sweetheart, Harry Mathews. After giving birth to two children, Niki grew bored of her life as a mother and housewife. She suffered from severe depression for a long time. Eventually she cured herself with painting, and left Mathews and their two children.
It was the time when Niki created the work Tirs, one of which is Portrait of My Lover, where Niki shot arrows at the portrait wearing white. The year 1961 also marks Niki’s official entering into the Nouveau réalisme movement. As the only female member of the movement, Niki points a gun, a symbol of male power, at male’s heads in oil paintings.
Niki reflects her liberation from love in art, and in the same way, changes her relationship with art after falling in love again. Her relationship with artist Jean Tinguely was a confrontation of conflicting forces, personalities and social classes, an entanglement of collisions and temptations. Together, they created works such as She-a-Cathedral, The Fantastic Paradise, and Tarot Garden, which represent different phases of their 30-year relationship. Ms Gourarier showed a few of the hundreds of letters between Niki and Jean, written during the days they lived separate because of work. Niki’s letters are imbued with fanatic love, sometimes fear of losing love, and sadness when knowing love is faded. Niki is so longing for love, that it seems that love has always remained a driving force of Niki’s art creations. It seems that love is a superficial topic, but Niki’s life as a woman and an artist is a demonstration of love’s importance in guiding a person’s life.
In the end, Ms Gourarier shared her perspectives as an anthropologist. According to recent research results by historians, love has different social positions in human society. Today, as we have freedom to choose love, love has become a decisive and serious part of our life. But in the meanwhile, sociologist and anthropologist studies show that male and female view and experience love differently: while women have learnt to realize themselves through love relationships a long time ago, men, on the contrary, learnt to realize themselves outside of love relationships. Ms Gourarier bases her research on a hypothesis, that is love is a major place of gender inequalities. This is an important principle especially when equalities between men and women have become a social norm today. The way that Niki de Saint Phalle is obsessed with love and men, according to Ms Gourarier, is not unique, but shows women’s obedience to love.
