Professor Plinio Innocenzi of Università degli Studi di Sassari gives a lecture about Leonardo da Vinci’s scientific and technological achievements, and the Renaissance Genius’ relationship with his time’s scientific development. This is the second lecture of The Art of Leonardo Opera Omnia Exhibition series.
Prof. Plinio Innocenzi, Università degli Studi di Sassari, Italy
When Da Vinci first arrived in Florence at the age of 14, it was the time when the Florence Cathedral’s dome was completed. Designed by genius architect Filippo Brunelleschi, the dome is free of elaborate and expensive scaffolding. Due to the project’s unprecedented size, Brunelleschi also designed a set of building machinery, which were discarded in plazas and warehouses after completion. Da Vinci began drawing the structures down after seeing them, and thus embarked on his lifelong journey of scientific and technological innovation.
Da Vinci’s discoveries span a wide range of fields, from mechanical engineering to human body. Prof. Innocenzi listed a few of his find-outs:
Fusee: Leonardo is not the inventor of the fusee system, but he discovered its potential to be used in cooperation with the more sophisticated, spring and escapement mechanisms in clocks.
Aircraft: Leonardo is the first man to conduct research in the realm of aviation. He carried on meticulous observations and studies on flying birds, wrote Codex on the Flight of Birds. He later conceived the earliest practical parachute (Codex Atlanticus, folio 1058v, c.1485) based on his friend Francesco di Giorgio’s sketch, providing parameters that are proved to be plausible by a group of scientists in 2000. He also designed flying machine (also known as the “ornithopter”) based on his studies on birds.
Golden Ratio: Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man (c.1490) is based on Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio’s description of the proportions of the human body. Before him, many Renaissance scientists and architects had drawn their imperfect versions of the Vitruvian Man. However, none of them went as far as Da Vinci, who precisely calculated the human proportions, and even figured out the perfect height of a male: 1.76 meters.
Steam cannon: Da Vinci’s foresight is also revealed in his design of steam-powered cannon Architonnerre, nearly three centuries before the first Industrial Revolution. In the 21st century, some MIT scientists recreated Architonnerre, which turns out to contain the same amount of kinetic energy as a bullet fired from a machine gun.
According to Prof. Innocenzi, many of Da Vinci’s genius conceptions, though not being realized at his time due to limits in materials, were proved to be valid by experimenters in later generations.
Leonardo da Vinci led a spiritually rich life, with a continuous curiosity in nature and science. “Da Vinci was interested in painting, but not as much as in the exploration of nature,”Prof. Innocenzi said upon answering an audience’s question, “That’s why a lot of his paintings remains unfinished, because he would just put them aside when there’s a more attractive scientific issue.”
