Lecture Report | South of South America: The Stories of Three Poets

Held on July 27, the third academic lecture of the CAFAM exhibition “Leandro Erlich: The Confines of The Great Void” invited renowned Chinese poet Xi Chuan to speak about the Argentine artist’s origin - South America. While Erlich acknowledged that many elements in his artworks, such as mirror, maze garden, the concrete and the void, are inspired by Argentine literature giant Borges, Xi Chuan brought  the audience to the South American art scene by introducing South American poetry and contemporary South American poets such as Borges, Gelman and Bolaño.

Xi Chuan first visited South America a few years ago. At that time, he was surprised at how different people in the other side of the world think, feel and express themselves from Chinese people. He believes that it’s a fundamental difference that originates from people’s daily experience. One good example is the street graffiti. The graffiti on Latin American streets seem to be different from anywhere else in the world, which are rich in color and adornment.

What impresses Xi Chuan in his visit to South America is that people there treat their literature with great respect. For instance, there’s a street in Buenos Aires named after Borges. The restaurant that Borges went to all the time with his friend Casares now puts the two masters’ statues in their old seats, as if they were still sitting there speaking ill of other people.

Xi Chuan spoke of a surrealistic encounter he had with Borges: he received a book with Borges’ signature in it from a student of Borges, which, according to the student, was upon Borges’ request, despite the fact that Borges had already passed away for a decade. “When Borges gave this book to me, he had a wish for me to give it to a translator who’s from a far away place and speaks strange language,” the student said. His words gave Xi Chuan goose bumps - it’s like his fate is linked to Borges’ - something magic that he believes can only happen in South America. Later in his life, he met many people who claimed to have met Borges, which he began to believe after that magic encounter. Now, he is having another encounter with Borges at CAFAM through Leandro Erlich’s exhibition. He finds it especially interesting to see Borges’ ideas realized visually as an exhibition.

Xi Chuan then moved on to talk about the Latin American Boom. He believed that the reality is handled as a part of history in Latin American literature. This is because Latin American literature and art was greatly affected by the political situation around 1960s. That probably explains Argentine poetry’s realistic character, represented by Juan Gelman’s poems. One of the most important contemporary poet of Latin America, Gelman has led a turbulent life because of political oppression. He wrote about his life experience in his poems, documented the reality that should be memorized. Xi Chuan believes it to be very different from Chinese poetry that features romanticism.

Borges is different from Gelman. Gelman once commented about Borges to Xi Chuan: “He’s blind. The world he knows is the world selected by other people, his secretary and friends. He doesn’t know what’s going on in the world”. According to Xi Chuan, one of the themes Borges explored was ‘nightmares’, which were mainly in three forms: maze, mirror and characters. That’s how Xi Chuan connected Leandro Erlich’s works naturally to Borges’ literature.

Xi Chuan believes that Borges’ way of thinking is rooted in Latin American culture, which as a Chinese he finds very strange but charismatic. He thinks Borges as a writer whose color would never fade, because what he created is a way of thinking, and a way to care about the world.

In the end, Xi Chuan talked about Bolaño, and poets of younger generations. He finds their poems brimmed with youth, sex, revolutionary spirit, and ebullience towards life. “As you get in contact with the Argentine artists,” said Xi Chuan, “you can see the bubbles growing out of their bodies. Inside the bubbles there is art, sunshine, oddity and creativity.” He feels that Latin American literature is rooted in its land, and only when Chinese literature draws its inspiration from its own reality, that it can be truly considered original.

The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
