在1998年中央美术学院80周年校庆的日子里,叶浅予先生的亲属遵照叶老生前的遗愿,将他的大批作品捐赠给他执教过半个多世纪的学院,其中就有好几箱速写。我和壁画系主任孙景波教授代表学校前往接受捐赠,清点作品。那日,好几位同学埋头工作了大半天,才将成本成札的速写清点完毕,共有近8000张。景波先生当即决定,他正在主编的《中国素描经典画库·叶浅予》这一本就主要选用这批捐赠中的作品。叶浅予先生生前已出版多种由他自己选定或同意的速写集,由于这次捐赠的机缘,便有了他去世后新的一本且收入许多未出版作品的一本。
叶浅予先生一生总共画了多少幅速写,可能是一个艺术史之谜。粗略的估算,应该不少于25000幅。所以,到目前为止的各种已出版的叶浅予速写集加在一起,相对于他所画的全部速写,也只如巨大冰山浮出海面的一角。我和景波先生感慨地谈到,每在国外著名的艺术博物馆看作品,我们都会为那些经典大师的速写所激动,激动的既有那些速写无比生动的手迹,还有从中可以感受到的艺术家极为勤奋的精神。在叶浅予的速写面前,我们也同样产生这种激动。

叶浅予曾经说过:“1933年秋天,在上海与墨西哥漫画家格罗皮斯相识,我见他身上经常带着小本本,记录他在旅行中所见的各种形象,作为创作素材,从此我也拿起了速写本。”实际上在1933年以前,叶先生就画速写,只不过从那以后,他更加自觉地以速写为业,速写本和铅笔成为他随身必备的工具。熟悉叶先生的美术界同仁都知道,他穿的衣服总有一个特制的大口袋,那里永远放着随时可以掏出的速写本。可以说,速写就是他的生活方式,也是他的生命方式。
叶浅予的艺术名声首先是由他的漫画奠立的。他称得上二十世纪前半叶画坛特别早熟的画家之一,年纪轻轻便才华横溢,用犀利的笔锋挑起当时大都市现实的帷幕,描绘普通的生活,对人间不平等的世相给予无情的揭露。他笔下的“王先生”和“小陈”两个漫画形象早在30年代就广为传布。后来,他在漫画创作的同时,也进行中国画人物画创作,成为一位在中国画人物画领域自创格式、开拓新途的名家。
从漫画到中国画,叶浅予的专攻起了变化,但他对速写的钟情却一直未变。速写在他全部艺术创造中的意义是双重的:一方面,无论在漫画还是在中国画创作上,他的速写都是一个素材的宝库,为许多漫画和中国画作品作了造型的积累和构思的准备。1942年以前,他的速写是漫画形式的一种延伸,用他自己的话说,“这些速写造型夸张,加上个标题或几句俏皮话,点出人物的个性或生活背景,成为漫画的一种新体裁。”后来作中国画时,“我的速写开始为国画服务,依靠速写为人物形象的仓库”。难以设想,没有速写的叶浅予漫画和中国画人物画能够出现那么多呼之欲出的鲜活形象,能够唤起观众由衷的亲切感受。但是,另一方面,他的速写世界又是独立的。“速写除了为我的创作服务外,已逐渐发展为表现生活的新创作体裁”,“速写使我领会到积累形象对于创作的重要性,然而,我画速写,并不单纯为了这一个目的。在很多场合,生活本身就有许多激动人心的美丽图画,可以通过速写直接记录下来,成为创作的作品”。叶浅予速写的后一种意义可能是更重要的。把速写当做创作本身,其他画家也能做到,但在他那里,不仅仅是认识,更是一种志向,这就与众不同了。这种志向和实践的统一,使得他一生都未曾离开速写,也使得他的速写世界成为一个充沛、丰富、新鲜且充满活力的独立的世界。

叶浅予的速写世界更是一个生命的世界,那里有山川、河流、田野与城市、街道,有森林、花木、走兽和翎毛,凡是有生命的东西都会落入他的眼帘,凡是落入他的眼帘的形象都会化为他笔底的形象。我们都知道,叶浅予的速写中又尤以舞蹈人物速写最富代表性,舞蹈人物速写占去了他盛年以后的许多时光,就是因为舞蹈中的人物动态是生命形态的集中体现,绽放出生命内在的光彩。正是在一次次对生命形态的观察、默想与迅速肯定中,艺术家自己的生命价值也得到体现。
叶浅予曾经说过:“要穷通人情世态。对人情世态不仅要通,而且要穷通,懂得非常透彻,要非常理解人情和世态,也就是人与社会。要研究人,研究社会,要研究得很透彻。光看表面不行,光在课堂里画模特更不行,要到生活中去研究人,研究生活,研究社会,做到穷通。”从这样的话里,可以看到一个讲求画理的作为教师的叶浅予,更可以看到一个性情率直的作为艺术家的叶浅予。他作画就像他说话一样,锁定目标,锲而不舍,狠准深入,凸显灵魂。他用自己在造型语言上的“穷通”履行了阐述画理时所要求的“穷通”,他的速写因此成为有风格的速写。
用简练的笔法塑造形象,是速写的一般面貌。叶浅予画了几十年的速写,对于形象的把握已经得心应手,寥寥数笔便使形象跃然纸上。他曾把速写技法的要点归结为“第一目识,第二心记,第三意测”,也就是把观察与想象联系起来,把记录与自由造型联系起来,打通对形象的认识、理解与表达的各个环节,使速写的过程成为创作的过程。因此,除了简练以外,叶浅予速写的风格是他对事物本质的刻画。他有时完全用线,有时用线与皴擦结合,有时综合使用媒材,调动不同手法,都是为了传达所画对象给予他的最本性的特征。在大量的人物速写中,他着力的不是人物的外表,而是人物躯体在动态过程中的有机整体,与其说捕捉的是人物动作的“动态线”,不如说他抓到的是构成人物运动的“生命线”。他的作品传神之处不是细节,也不仅仅是头部、眼神或表情,而是人物在运动中占有并且撑开的整个空间场势。

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer
Article I
This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.
Article II
Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.
Article III
Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.
Article IV
Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.
Article V
During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.
Article VI
Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.
CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement
According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):
I. General Provisions
(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.
(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.
(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.
II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use
(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.
(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.
(3) Geographical Scope of Use
The applicable geographic scope is global.
The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).
III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use
Use in perpetuity.
IV. Licensing Fees
The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.
After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.
Additional Terms
(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.
(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.
(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.
Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
