Foreword
Dear students:
Spring arrives suddenly when we barely feel the end of winter. And here also arrives your graduation exhibition. As a routine, the head of department needs to write a few words for the exhibition. I'd like to deliver my best wishes for you in this letter.
I would like to begin the letter with the speciality of this year's gruadation. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, your graduation exhibition won't happen in a physical gallery space. From January 23, when Wuhan began its lockdown and China shut down all the school campuses, till mid-April, many schools still remain closed due to concerns of teachers and students' health and safety. In order to make sure that graduate students could finish their graduation works on a high level, the faculty managed to design a scientific, systematic online teaching scheme.
Compared to other departments at CAFA, the Printmaking Department may have encountered the least obstacles in online teaching and exhibition, because the department's pedagogy has inherited the openness and scientific intelligence characteristic of printmakers. We welcome any changes and draw creative potentials from the changes. It doesn't matter if we can't perform printmaking because we'll just paint on canvas; it doesn't matter if we don't want to paint on paper or canvas because we can use computer software; it doesn't matter if we can collect materials from real life because we can do it online. Even though your physical being is limited by walls, doors and windows, but your vision is broader than usual. There's an old Chinese saying that goes: Fortune and misfortune are two buckets in the same well. The pandemic enabled the whole country to dig into the lifestyle of the Internet age, which helps us reflect on the pre-pandemic digital lifestyle and give an insight into the post-pandemic life. The scale of your exhibition and the number of your works shown online could expand in a way that physical exhibitions won't be able to do. You will be recorded together with the milestones of human history, and perhaps even the turning point of east-west relationship. I sincerely wish the success of your exhibition, and I hope you see this exhibition with a broader sense of space and time.
“Turning point” is a buzzword of 2020. It is used to describe the pandemic, the economy, and the China-US relationship. People as individuals are passive, flowing up and down with the world trend, the nation and community and their socials strata - which we usually describe as "Life is uncertain".
Graduation is another turning point in your life. I don't know if your life will turn better or worse, but I can give you a little reminder: Life is full of hardship and challenges, but you can treat them with different attitudes. Humanity is complex, and human being has an unlimited capacity for happiness and misery. Human being's high intelligence is also their source of unhappiness, but as long as you have the will to carry on you'll be fine no matter what attitude you take.
Dear students, you graduate at such a special time, and this probably means you'll be faced with more choices. But as long as the light of hope keeps on shining in you, the disasters will awaken your animal instinct to survive. At the same time, you should hold dear to the love and kindness, and the humble yet proud, extraordinary heart that won't yield to any difficulty. Apart from the fundamental characters of human being, you also have your special character which belongs to artists. You have the gift to discover beauty, and the ability to create beauty. I hope the beauty and kindness you create will not only benefit the society but also support your own life.
