Foreword
The Function of Eyes
Once a teacher asked the students a question: What is the function of eyes? Many students casually gave their 'standard answers', but the teacher's answer was to their surprise: "The function of eyes is to remind us that there are a lot of things in the world that we can't see."
Under the influence of our family, school and the society, we have mastered some knowledge that we call common sense since very young age. These established knowledge unconsciously formed our habitual ways of observing the world, and judging rights or wrongs. One of those established knowledge is "seeing is believing, hearing is false", which instructs us to believe the visible. This way being pragmatical is more underlined, and keeping one's feet firmly on the ground is more valued than unrestrained daydreaming.
Astronomers and physicists' theories of the composition of universe is quite intriguing. They believe the universe is composed of visible matter, dark matter and dark energy. The visible matter, such as galaxies, nebulas, star clusters, stars, the sun, the moon, comets, meteors and everything visible on earth, only takes up 4.4% of the whole universe. This means that most part of the universe is invisible. The universe is formed by invisible power.
It is fair to say that the visible is usually generated and formed by the invisible. It's like physical vs. mental, notion vs. concept, method vs. methodology...'How to make visible the invisible' has become an increasingly important creative idea, and is widely used in the fields that explore the future and the unknown. While we focus our sight on these glorious 'trends', we should perhaps also see the ubiquitous 'blind spots': How about those invisible existence?
The coronavirus pandemic that spreaded across the world since the beginning of 2020 has brought to us an unexpected fatal crisis. The human race needs to review the meaning of life and being alive, and make the pandemic an opportunity to reflect on the common sense that we have long taken for granted, to stop being arrogant and ignorant, and to begin sensing the invisible wisdom.
"How to make visible the invisible" should be an eternal research subject.
The 2020 graduation works exhibition is held online. This has brought a special seasoning to the graduate students' creative practice and the exhibition. We hope that through this unique exhibition, the ideas of the students from the School of Design, the 'visible' and 'invisible' insight, judgment and creativity could be well presented.
I wish you success on your exhibition.
