Foreword
Our world is undergoing a dramatic ecological change, not only in the natural environment where the change is unprecedented, but also in the social environment where the result of the change will only reveal itself in the long run.
The School of Architecture, CAFA has been working on a "new ecology" experiment that devotes to the integration of the two environments. On the one hand, we try to build the integration of teachers and students, from discipline, academy to the society - this begins with individual growth of each and every member of the school, and gets strong through the growth of the discipline and the school, and eventually becomes mature via social practice; on the other hand, we try to construct a environment-based practical system rooted in consciousness of contemporary problems, and the traditional practice of architecture, interior, urban and rural, landscape design established from nature - it is historical in time, flexible towards change; local, porous and globally-connected in space. The multi-level natural image that transcends the relationship of "seed-teacher and student", "tree-academic learning", "woods-discipline", "forest-school" and "ecology-society" is exactly the character of "new ecology", and the reason why our exhibition is titled "new ecology".
In terms of the exhibition's theme, the "new" in "new ecology" is both an adjective, which shows how different disciplines adjust to the future utopian program once again, and carry on their new language experiments, and a verb, which exhibits the school's thinking on how to carry out concrete design practice under limited spatial conditions, and make great change to the society with small actions. In terms of the exhibition's form, "new ecology" is presented as a future natural system composed by "mountains-and-waters landscape" and "long scroll". The exhibition makes an archipelago with models, drifting or running deep in the still water of museum space; it makes a scroll with image/text - designs, research and writings from different disciplines including architecture, urban and rural, landscape and interior interweaves with each other in the contemporary China, where production, life and ecology are interrelated.
I appreciate the thinking and creation from the 36 graduate students and their teachers for this exhibition. You are performing your duty to the society, and cosntructing our future ecology with your pure and fair values and actions.
