奔赴前线的“木刻轻骑队”——鲁艺木刻工作团

由中央美术学院、广州美术学主办的“站在人生的前线——胡一川艺术与文献展”正在在中央美术学院美术馆展出,展期将持续12月23日。本次展览以聚焦胡一川不平凡的人生历程和艺术历程为内容,展示了胡一川各时期重要油画、版画具有代表性的作品和珍贵文献约500余件,共分为五个板块,从胡一川的口述史、美术作品、美育文献、人生抉择等方面进行切入,多角度展现胡一川“勇敢地跑到时代的前头当旗手”的人生追求。我们将循着展陈顺序,按版块,以图文的方式,进一步梳理胡一川与展品,展品与时代之间的关系。


1938年11月7日,延安鲁艺的中央大礼堂内人声哗哗,这里正举行着一场由鲁迅木刻研究班主办的木刻展览会,展期为三天。参展作品为一百八十余幅纯木刻,参观人数达三千余人。此展览会按研究班的总负责人胡一川的形容,是一件“破天荒”[1]的事情。

趁着展览会成功举办的振奋之际,胡一川极力地向院级提出怀揣在心中已久的想法——成立一个鲁艺木刻工作团。他希望成立一支驰骋在中国抗战前线的木刻轻骑队,把政治、鲁艺与木刻的影响扩大出去,“使木刻变为抗战的刀枪和争取抗战的最后胜利,建立独立自由幸福的新中国的指路碑。”[2]

“……在鲁迅先生逝世二周年纪念的突击运动期中,我们木刻研究班集体地亲手选印了二十本木刻集,差不多花了一星期才把这集子印出来,分赠给首长们和各个机关,鲁迅夫人许广平女士处也寄了一本去,苏联革命博物馆也寄了一本,我写一个编后,内容是这样:今年七月廿四日我们在弥漫全国的炮火声中聚集起来,成立了鲁迅木刻研究班。我们也曾向延安的同志们报告过一些我们学习的结果,在钟楼前面我们张贴过四期木刻壁报,现在为了纪念我们伟大的革命导师,中国新兴木刻的播种者鲁迅先生,我们在纪念他的逝世二周年的突击运动中,集体地亲手地从我们这短促的学习时期内所得到的一切收获,选印了廿本木刻集。我们带着十二万分的热诚,把它们分赠给首长们和各个机关,我们希望得到的回答是宝贵的指示和帮助,在不久的将来为了更实在地站牢自己的岗位,把木刻带到大众的中间去,我们希望在西北角上能够出现一支木刻轻骑队,奔驰在各个角落,各个阶层里,使木刻变为抗战的刀枪和争取抗战的最后胜利、建立独立自由幸福的新中国的指路碑。后来何其芳同志看后,他认为指路碑太厉害了一点,他给我改为里程碑。
第二样值得记一记的就是十月革命纪念节那天起到九日止在中央大礼堂由木刻研究班主办开了三天木刻展览会,纯木刻的展览会在延安是破天荒的,第一次作品有一百八十多幅,参观的人大约有三千多人。为了扩大政治、鲁艺和木刻的影响,我最近极力的提出要组织一个鲁艺木刻工作团,我作了一个工作计划拿给院长看了,他给我的回复是,说他非常同意我这样去做,不过还要经过组织部的决定,我想假若没有其他的问题的话,那么一支木刻轻骑队是有希望出现的。”[3]

11月中旬,木刻工作团的组织事宜大体解决,以胡一川为团长,罗工柳、彦涵、华山四人组成的鲁艺木刻工作团正式成立(后来到达《新华日报华北版》报社后,陈铁耕、杨筠二人也加入了工作团)。

11月24日凌晨,鲁艺木刻工作团摸着黑夜与星光从延安出发,带着在延安收集的木刻作品和木刻工具,在中共中央北方局杨尚昆的带领下,他们渡过黄河、越过敌人的封锁线,翻过绵山到太行山敌后抗日民主根据地去开展木刻宣传工作,开办木刻展览。[4]

“我们的队伍随着延水向东流,向前吧!这是冒着敌人的炮火前进的第一步啊!”[5]

如何扩大木刻的重要性——在敌后方的木刻工作应该如何开展?

如何扩大木刻的活动范围——把木刻从以往城市展览普及至工农兵大众之中流传?

如何创造民族形式的新木刻——让只限于知识分子欣赏的新兴木刻作品转变为大众接受并喜爱的抗战宣传工具?

这是木刻工作团在敌后方作抗战宣传工作中面临且必须要解决的问题,也关涉到胡一川个人在这一时期对艺术语言的不断探索与实验。

初入晋东南,木刻工作团主要以举办流动展览会的方式进行木刻宣传。从1938年冬至1939年春,工作团先后在晋西115师政治部、蟠龙村、双池镇、决死第二纵队、沁县铜川中学、长治县莲花池、决死第三纵队等地开过七次展览会,并有四次座谈会。[6]

流动展览会的方式虽起了一定的宣传作用,但面对敌后方老百姓,还不足以达到最好的宣传效果。如何更大地拓宽木刻宣传的范围?面对此种情况,鲁艺木刻工作团听从上级指示创办木刻工厂,大规模印制出木刻连环画、报头、木刻漫画、木刻标语等,再将木刻印刷品散发至每一位老百姓的手中;工作团部分成员也被聘为《新华日报》木刻记者。这一期间,胡一川创作了一套《太行山下》、华山创作了一套《王家庄》、彦涵创作了一套《张大成》,并先后出版了五期《敌后方木刻》,每期约20000份。可惜1939年10月遭遇敌军“扫荡”,《敌后方木刻》停刊,木刻原板也被毁于战火之中。

宣传的方式丰富了起来,但关于木刻语言的问题又呈现出来:一般的老百姓能否看懂这些新兴木刻作品?他们能否从中领会到抗战的宣传思想?

1939年7月5日,胡一川在日记中写下了一篇长文《谈中国的新兴木刻》,反思了木刻语言的大众化问题:

“……我们说中国的新兴木刻确实是进步了,而且现在还继续不断进步,但它主要的缺点还是不够大众化,从什么地方看出来哩?鲁艺木刻工作团收集了许多名贵的木刻,差不多全国木刻工作同志的作品都收集齐了,除了在延安大礼堂展览过外,它还到过吕梁山游击区的山沟里、敌人的后方、士兵的队伍中、偏僻的村庄里,开过各种各样的展览会,观众的成分不同了,除一部分知识分子来参观给我们批评外,还有大多数的工农士兵。他们感觉到稀奇,因为他们没有看见过这样的木刻画,看过以后他们不会在批评薄上批评,因为他们多半不认识字,而且没有这个习惯。你如果问他好不好,他们立即说:‘很好!’你如果再问他懂不懂,他就会说:‘啊呀!那就说不上了。’甚至摇摇头笑嘻嘻,好像很难为情似的跑开了。在表面上看来,他们并不是看不懂,而是一种谦虚。后来我们觉得用探问的还是很难得到他们的意见,因此我们改变了方式,混在老百姓里面,装着自己也是来看展览会的样子,不要使老百姓发觉到你在注意他们。……他们对于画上所刻的细线条,也看不出好处来,反而在他们的同伴间说:‘那有些像花脸。’但也有许多老乡看到骡车、自卫队拿着矛子时,他们会立即告诉其他的老乡,指手画脚地说:‘这是骡车,那是自卫队。’这也在说明着,他们对于看懂了他们所熟识而比较单纯和明朗的画面时,他们是感觉到非常有趣的。中国的新兴木刻不但中国的大多数文化水准很低的老百姓不大容易了解和接受,就是外国人看了,也觉得中国的新兴木刻有点像外国人刻的,而不是代表中国的木刻。这些都在说明中国的新兴木刻,不够大众化和民族化。……”[7]

在这种情形之下,使木刻从具有光影明暗的、精细的西方风格向具有中国本土气息的风格转变变得愈为紧迫,如何从中国的特殊环境之中探索出一条贴切中国百姓的“大众化、民族化”的木刻道路成为鲁艺木刻工作团的当务之急。“民间美术”成为了工作团的重要突破口。成员们开始留意观察百姓家中张贴的传统套色年画形式,从中汲取单纯明朗的线条与明亮鲜艳的色调作为改进抗战木刻版画的营养。

1940年开年之际,鲁艺木刻工作团创作出了第一批融入民间风格的新年画。其中有胡一川的《军民合作》、罗工柳的《积极养鸡,增加生产》、彦涵的《春耕大吉》、《保卫家乡》与杨筠的《纺织图》、《儿童团检查路条》。旧历年的前三天,胡一川与杨筠带着连夜赶印出来的新年画到武乡的西营集市上售卖,因为画面风格符合百姓的审美,价钱也便宜,受到了热烈的欢迎。

“农民们见到这些五彩耀眼的新年画,顿时抢购一空。”[8]
“木刻工作团搞的新年画获得群众的欢迎。北方局的杨尚昆同志,李大章同志一见面就说年画工作搞得好。十八集团军彭德怀副总司令来信说:‘……这次勇敢尝试,可以说是已经得到初步的成功……’。陆定一同志在干部会上对于这次年画工作也给于很高的评价。党和群众都给我们很大的鼓舞,使我们的信心更大。”[9]

1940年,彭德怀总司令给鲁艺木刻工作团的表扬信,中国国家博物馆藏,文物由胡一川捐赠。

经过三年多在敌后的工作,1941年,鲁艺木刻工作团中的成员陆续被调返延安。胡一川把木刻工作团在前方的作品带回鲁艺,并举行了一次观摩会,对延安鲁艺的艺术家们带来了木刻创作的新风气。

如张凡夫说:“昨天上午七点钟又由胡一川同志报告敌后方各抗日根据地怎样开展木刻运动及他亲身经历的工作情形,我想同志们都已看到、听到,是值得我们倾听和观摩的,开开眼界,明白在抗日战争中尤其在敌后方各抗日根据地中木刻的活动,收得了很好的成绩,如作品取材的新鲜、内容的充实、画面的魅力,充满了一种生动的气象。”[10]

1942年5月,毛泽东召开延安文艺座谈会,鲁艺木刻工作团深入民间与生活,结合大众喜闻乐见的年画形式进行创作的方式成为了延安鲁艺艺术创作的榜样,走向前方的鲁艺木刻工作团也成为了延安新木刻运动的前锋。

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

CAFA Art Museum Publication Authorization Agreement

I fully agree to CAFA Art Museum (CAFAM) submitting to CAFA for publication the images, pictures, texts, writings, and event products (such as works created during participation in workshops) related to me from my participation in public events (including museum member events) organized by the CAFA Art Museum Public Education Department. CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

Article II

Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.
