“万物生息——后石油时代的材料与设计”

“后石油时代”这个概念反映出我们这个时代面对能源问题的焦虑:工业革命以来两百年的发展使人类文明进入了一个加速时代。但今天,伴随着这些发展带来的一系列破坏(其中很多已经无法逆转),在全球变暖、极端天气、环境污染的背景下,新冠疫情又一次给了人类沉重一击,我们不禁要怀疑,这条高速公路通向的到底是天堂,还是地狱?

在这种普遍忧虑中,科技与设计常常被视为打破当下困境的关键力量。9月17日,由中央美术学院和伦敦设计博物馆共同主办的展览“万物生息——后石油时代的材料与设计”在中央美术学院美术馆开幕。本次展览汇聚了来自伦敦设计博物馆的百余件经典馆藏以及20位中国当代设计师的先锋创作,一方面围绕材料呈现其多样性和发展轨迹,另一方面围绕人类的生存困境、生态可持续的主题,寻找“碳中和”的新理念下跨学科的创新路径,探索可持续发展的未来。

展览有着一种诗意的态度。第一个部分“起源”展示了一批“原始”的材料,包括木头、粘土、矿石、棉花、塑料等等。粗犷的形态突出了材料作为物的性质,不管是直接从农田中采摘下来的棉花,还是经过切割打磨的木料,或是自化学工业中诞生的塑料,在展柜中都被还原为类似自然物的状态。展示在材料碎片旁边的显微图像,提示着我们材料有着自己的肌理乃至肉身——这种认识的转化并不困难,因为我们的身体向来就被视为“材料”(material)。而当我们开始承认材料具有身体这一逆向认知时,自然的概念就将材料拉至我们身边——自然物不再是海德格尔所说的无世界的(Weltlos),相反,自然物与我们共享着世界和家园。共享家园的想法激发起我们对材料的关切,这种关切不仅仅关于工具性的意向,也不仅是科学式的检验。材料提示了我们人类作为在世物固有的脆弱性。

第二部分“转化”把我们重新拉回人类力量的发展史,在这里工业和设计扮演了突出角色。技术发展改变、创造了材料,并用材料改变了整个世界的面貌——从航天器到易拉罐,以及在展厅中多次出现的现代家具。椅子最直接地展现了材料和设计理念的变化,这里有现代设计标志之一的索耐特14号椅、以人体为参照的“骨椅”(马岩松)、算法参与设计的“Endless Form”(张周捷)。“转化”部分重新唤起了意向性的主体,这个科学家和设计师式的主体同时也是一个造物主式的主体,它由一个个设计史上的大师的名字标记,创造、定义了材料(在这个部分它们也重新退回生活世界之外)和设计史,同时也定义了世界和我们。

第三部分“影响”是一个哀悼的空间,它同时也标示着现代技术的某些“后果”(consequences)。这里黑色的墙面指向了与“转化”部分完全不同的意象:死亡。作为驱力的另一极,死亡总是伴随着创生,不论是在古老神话中的阿卡迪亚还是现代想象中的技术乌托邦。过去两百年的现代技术建立在一系列沉重的剥削上,既是对自然的,也是对人的。通过对采矿、橡胶以及集约化棉花种植等产业的个案研究、一个针对全球开采系统数据的调查,呈现自然资源开发的种种影响,这其中不仅是“给我们赖以生存的地球带来灾难性后果”这样的老生常谈,还有更复杂的伦理和政治原因——伴随着经济全球化,劳动压榨和环境污染被抛给了开采与加工地,这是这里发生的种种(自然和人的)死亡维持着现代性技术主体的创造性欲望,而产业分工的区隔使得死亡与他者一道陷入沉默。

最后一个部分“进化”重新展现了一个乐观的未来,在这个充满不安而又宏大复杂、人们纷纷选择回避问题的当下,设计师、科学家继续担当起挑起重任的角色。寻求更合理、更智慧的材料使用方式被视为走向新生的路径。当代设计师们积极采用尖端科技来研发更具可持续性的材料,探索如何更好地利用被低估的资源,并在传统方法之中找寻可取之处,用创新的旧物质和传统的新方法,重新平衡人与地球之间的关系。几件纺织类作品从不同角度阐释了这一主题:Faber Futures利用细菌实现的新染织技术直面了染织工业的严重污染问题,林芳路的装置《锤子》展示了古老的侗族传统纺织工艺以及参与其中的女性的独特力量,另一件凯瑟琳·冯·瑞星博(Kathrin von Rechenberg)的装置《莨鞣》则探索了一种名为香云纱的传统技术的潜力,这种极端依赖自然条件的材料代表着对流行的加速主义叙事的拒绝。杨泓捷的《半人类花瓶II》将海拉人体细胞(hunan HeLa cells)覆盖在3D打印的花瓶上,完成了一件后人类蓝白瓷。

从微观结构到全球的流动,从平凡的日常物到探索未知的媒介,材料贯穿着情感、技术和政治生活。探索新材料、重新设计和应用传统材料,围绕材料与环境问题展开的系统设计思考,本次展览试图从材料与设计的历史文化方面展开中西方交流与碰撞,在“后石油时代”这一全球语境下探讨可持续未来的可能。

据悉,本次展览将持续至10月17日,并将开展系列学术讲座及公共教育活动。

I fully agree to CAFA Art Museum (CAFAM) submitting to CAFA for publication the images, pictures, texts, writings, and event products (such as works created during participation in workshops) related to me from my participation in public events (including museum member events) organized by the CAFA Art Museum Public Education Department. CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

Article II

Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
