勿失毋忘 | 田友自述:我学雕刻的经过

编者按:滑田友先生是20世纪中国雕塑发展史上具有深远影响的艺术家,他在吸收研究中国雕塑风格和西方雕塑语言的基础上形成自己杰出的表达与表现,探索中国雕塑既民族且现代的道路。“勿失毋忘——雕塑家滑田友诞辰120周年纪念展”以滑田友的一份自述文字作为开篇的引子,结合他从淮阴、甪直到巴黎、北平一路走过来的照片、证件、通信等,开启滑田友勿失毋忘的人生动心故事。

我是江苏淮阴人,生于渔沟镇之农人家,素寒,八岁读四书五经,十二始得入学校,一九二四年毕业于当地省立第六师范美术科后,每以未能升学,郁郁不得志,一日临流自悲,见上游有瓜皮之顺流而下者,被阻于横流之桥船,辗转多时,后方得从两船隙间复下,因晤忍耐乃成功之珍宝,顿释忧虑,而去为小教师者数年,恒于休息时执画笔作画不辍,假期又必来上海新华艺专暑期学校研究素描,直至其研究系为止。

一九三〇年冬,为取乐小儿而刻一木兔,颇生动,因即为该孩作像,五日间神态毕肖,大乐,当以开学期临,忽携赴任所,诸同事咸来聚观,劝寄照片与国内名艺术家品评,于是遂寄徐悲鸿先生,不想复信既来,悲鸿先生大为赞赏,约于春假间赴京面谈,谈后劝更加努力,并允必为设法赴法留学焉。

从此悲鸿先生逢人必道,凡其友好,无不识田友者,故不久之后,江小鹣先生特乘飞机进京邀悲鸿先生为之介绍,而利用暑假期助成其武汉两市之总理及主席铜像,于是于一九三〇年夏间遂来上海,而开始专门雕塑之生活焉。小鹣事完后,复约继续,约同赴苏州东乡之甪直镇共观杨惠之之塑,该塑年久失修,业由教育部保存委员会建屋保存,已聘上海之名塑工年七十余者正在修理,小鹣见其修而复折者已两三次,知其能力薄弱,故特约田友留用,监视三日后,田友亦知此等工人只能一块一块堆砌,而从未见原作之全体,将原作背景中之山石颠倒乱置,绝无恢复原状之可能,遂取委员会所印之原作照片,斗合成幅,归上海与小鹣同拟一稿呈核委员会,又复来甪直将其所仅剩九块安入原处,其已被损坏者,则依图补之,此事至一九三二秋间始完。其最重要之感想,即为将来应如何保存中国古物及技术?今日之塑佛工人,等于农妇泥墙,全无技术之可言,若从而勿道真正误事,而中国之大如杨惠之宝藏者随处而有,年久失修,终有一日同归于尽矣。故自此以后,赴法研究之心益急,不独希望研究技术,而对于保存方法亦渴欲探讨者也。当此事完工时,正值小鹣工作较少,庐山陈散原先生年已八十,悲鸿及其诸友约赴牯岭为其铸像,以为寿礼,成后随离沪赴京,至京后,悲鸿先生大喜曰,来得好,可以随我赴法矣。

到法后,从名雕塑家布夏先生学习雕塑,布师院派乃正宗,正确精到,田友于忠实研究之外,逐日访观各大博物院潜自观察,有一得即试,每将现代艺人之秘要,与前日曾在杨塑中之得互相比拟隐用于其研究所中,布师见地宽广,包容万象,不但不责我任意孤行,反而褒奖有加,故于入学之第二年即以第一名素描及第一名雕塑考得巴黎美校之正格生。一九三四年春,经济渐定,而先父适于是时逝世,又值悲鸿先生返国,留旅费谓不得已时尚可归国,然田友曾再三考虑,既随徐先生来,是曾以有能力者之名义而受其助,今先君既逝,可谓至悲,然归后亦徒见其墓耳。而有何面目见徐先生之左右?故决定至死不归,当日法国正值失业人成数百万,外人谋生,几等于梦想,于是极端节省,期以二百法郎为一月之开支,不知旅费之数有限,而生活之资常需,由二百省至一百,由一百而至五十,不数月,虽每法郎维持三日,冻馁之虞,决不能免矣,正穷之日,因房租无法支付,搬入较廉之所,比邻而居者,适为冼星海君,见面后快谈数日,相见恨晚,然遭逢于山穷水尽之时,其乐亦仅昙花一现耳。冼君乃小提琴家,刻苦坚毅,见其邻更穷,乃日出以其小提琴向人求乞,每晚却以二十法郎来曰:如何?你十个,我十个,此事使田友终生不能忘,而忆及却使人泪下沾襟者,其地下有灵,不知可知田友今已生归否?如此数日后,冼君知不能久持。遂于英国船中,得一洗菜位置而归。

一九三五年秋田友枯瘦萎莓几不能支持,一日访友,竟昏倒于地道车中,醒时忽有两人抚慰,则巴黎之警察也,相与车送医院休养至二十余日始出,当在医院之时,亦曾深加考虑,以为巴黎美术校,为研究者诚佳,然学生只为学生,何人知我之能力?如欲生存,非做较大作品不可,故出院后决访私立学院,而得儒礼昂学院,盖其模特儿可摆姿势一月,且上下午皆有工作,因商之该校长,请先入校,后付款,竟得欣允,遂开始工作焉。在未出医院时,校中之素描师马夏来先生已知田友穷,曾特亲往中国领事馆访林领事请其特别帮助,故此时生活亦较改善矣。在该学院三月后,所成者计等身之大雕刻二件,尼克罗斯师百般劝送,一九三六年春季沙龙,于是遂得铜质奖章焉。是年适李石曾先生在巴黎,知田友穷而努力不辍,遂提议中法大学协会,给予官费三年,既得官费,因知其来之不易,每日自六时起身起,至晚十时止,无时不出入于雕塑室、画室、博物院、图书馆中,是故田友能于此中三年中,获得打定根基,皆李先生之力也。

 一九三九年冬战事爆发,官费亦了,决计归,于友饯行席上,遇里昂中法大学校长潘季屏先生,因谈及三年来之最大憾事,即未能再做大雕刻耳,当时潘先生亦深为同情,临别问所须时间及经济几何?以须时四月,加以材料等用费,如能倍加其生活费则可对,当嘱稍待数日或可设法也,次日复见,则已为筹四月生活费用三千六百法郎,盖石曾先生适在巴黎该校亦世界社事业之一环。四月生活费仅能生活,而材料模特儿等费,尚无着落,实难办到,然亦勉允,冀或有其他机会也。工作开始后,因战争关系,材料渐少,生活亦贵,不两月,三千余法郎净尽矣。进退不得,盖雕塑乃鲜泥制成,中途而废,则全功尽弃矣。正踌躇间,接使馆通知,谓教育部旅费已到,可以归国矣。田友因思雕塑家者,雕塑乃其生命,归否在所不计,作品不可不成,因遂往使馆请求尽先拨旅费应用,结果作品成,旅费适尽,而德国人亦入侵巴黎矣。

一九四〇年秋,境况愈穷,又不得归,乃为人弄泥,以谋一饱,且工且读,直至一九四一年夏间,遂得沙龙银质奖章焉。既得银奖后,稍稍闻名,有名装饰家溥发者来聘合作,生活乃得小康,然艺人本色,穷苦乃其自然,凡有所得,皆积蓄于一小盒中,四月之后,得十余千法郎,心计以此又可做雕塑矣。故不半年间遂辞去,仍渡学生生活,开始《沉思》一作,四个月后作品成,而所蓄不但净尽,反倒欠十余千,只以又成一作,喜不自禁,又去做工,以偿宿欠耳。于一九四三年,竟得春季沙龙金奖焉。按此十数年来,历尽辛苦,能自持不堕者,实以心念及诸先进当日之热心助我,使我无一日能忘,一方以幼时曾读经史,每至最苦之时,却能忆书中至言,不特能助我解除苦闷,而于研究方式,实生助力不少。盖艺术一事,漫视之每以为不过依样葫芦,但欲精确深究,则自各有千秋,非通达事理,运筹帷幄不可。

自得金奖后,素描师马夏来先生曾相劝曰,足下之技能至此,已达院派之极峰,年轻有为,此后应一一将作品试送于其他沙龙陈列,以验其评论如何?然后抉择一派,忠实从事不可拘于一隅。田友此时亦以自己所欲知者,已可遂意所欲,且当日曾应用,用直杨塑之法,亦曾获校中诸师之赞许,此时设以此术再征新兴各派意见,岂不更得?于是决计停赴美校,而从罗丹之门徒戴士比俄游,戴氏年已七十有六,每不愿入学生之研究室,既见戴后,开口便谈韵脚,其指示起落响应,清晰爽快,可惜言之谆谆,听之渺渺,如对牛弹琴耳。盖青年学生,绝无了解其指导之能力也。既见田友,则大喜,此后每入,必先看田友作品,出室又必重观一次,故田友从之虽仅二年,而受益诚不少也。法国解放后,戴去,乃遍访名家威纳亥格、义蒙、夏尼俄、波阿宋等畅谈,义蒙开口便谈伟大度而细玩其旨,皆不出中国书法,足见西欧现代艺无不倾心于中艺也。

一九四六年以后,乃开始以中国题材,应用气韵生动之法作塑,于是年三月间曾完《恐怖》一作,而于六月陈列于赛吕舍中艺博物院中展览,大得该院院长之赞美,每见必贺者凡廿次。当开放之日,室为拥满,谓为少见。是作后复陈列于同年秋季沙龙,而竟得巴黎市美术总监之赏鉴,决意收为国有,而陈列于法国国立现代艺术博物院中。按素来惯例,凡外籍艺人来法展览,而被法政府之收买者,皆陈列于薛德波博物院(专陈列外人艺术者),而对于田友此作则承认为巴黎派中之一新兴派,故遂陈列于其现代博物院中。

一九四六年六月间又完成《农夫》一作,其寓意为少年中国者,却于是年十月,陈列于巴黎高等美术学之展览大厅中,按巴黎美校中学生之恶作剧,为世界有名,凡无相当之魄力而竟陈列于是校者,每于开幕以前,即遭撕毁或涂抹,以示不满,但此次展览正恰相反,不独大得其爱护,其被感动者,竟念念有忘返之概,而校长几至欢喜若狂,在开幕之日,笑容满面,校长竟拉来一有名教士为田友介绍曰:应当请此最有意趣之艺人为耶稣作负十字架之像,将来必满君意,而校中诸师长亦咸来奖励,哥蒙先生捏着三个指头,用斩决的口吻说:很多的灵魂,布夏说,这是我的学生!尼克罗斯亦云是我的学生!有一有名之眼医医士,以手抚作云我的朋友!有名批评家格孩拜勒曰:足下做崩崩之所未能。是作后又陈列于一九四七年之独立沙龙中,卒为该名医让去。

一九四七年三月《母爱》一作成,于是陈列于是年之春季沙龙中,系田友自一九四六年后所有展览于春季沙龙者,皆陈列于第一室之主要位置。而今年之陈列尤佳,待展览会后,该作几被抓破,盖该作为石膏而作铜色,观者于欣赏以后,却以手指试敲,一验其是否铜质。法人之好奇,诚不亚于我同胞也,该作当然又为艺术总监所见,立电田友预先约购,谓不可让给他人也。而做总理石像之郎都斯基先生,特来庆贺,曰此作较其他尤美,应继续努力焉。而妇女小孩竟围观弗忍遽去焉。

盖一九四六年以后所作皆为想象作品,不受模特儿之拘束,为所欲为,尽量发挥之品,他人从未之见也。又在此十五年间,与雕塑同时研究者,即为雕塑不可缺少之素描,其研究之日程,即为上午雕塑而下午必作素描,在一九三六以前其描法一宗画家,至一九三七年觉画家素描上之光暗与雕塑无多大重要,有时反觉废失事,乃由光暗描法而改进为以体型描,至一九四〇年觉所描仍为复杂,乃改用铅笔描而仅勾其轮廓,一九四四年以后,遂专用墨笔线条以书法之用笔作画,其素描作品之陈列展览者,自一九四四年起,其七分钟速写有《沉思》一作,曾陈列于是年之秋季沙龙,开幕之日,即被政府收买,自此之后,年年不辍,而巴黎市艺术总监每延请为巴黎名人作像以为纪念焉,又在此两正式研究事业之外,亦潜心考察关于古物保存之处施,曾亲入铸铜,翻石膏、鉴石、烧瓷、放大缩小等雕刻之附属工厂实习,而成一中国雕塑美术建设师,而于一九四七年呈教育部批准焉。

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

Article II

Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

Article II

Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

CAFA Art Museum Publication Authorization Agreement

I fully agree to CAFA Art Museum (CAFAM) submitting to CAFA for publication the images, pictures, texts, writings, and event products (such as works created during participation in workshops) related to me from my participation in public events (including museum member events) organized by the CAFA Art Museum Public Education Department. CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.
