团体作为方法

“团体”,是艺术世界的一种常见工作方法。艺术团体,可能促成了某个观念的传播与接收,可能形成了有别于个人创作的另一条艺术史叙事脉络,也可能记录了一段共同成长的友谊。

此次展览即以“团体”作为切入以中央美术学院为坐标的中国美术史研究的一条线索,尝试梳理和展示中央美术学院百年发展史中各时期自组织艺术团体的文献,并抽取其中有历史代表性的若干团体作为样本进行剖析式的具体展示。

展览的第一部分以90个艺术团体的文献资料为内容,展览的第二部分以1920年代以来的3组艺术团体的文献与作品为内容,包含阿博洛学会(1920年代)、四方工作室(1990年代)和N12(2000年代)。

下面将为大家展开第三个参展艺术团体的样本——N12 (2000年代)。

团体理念:

与我们所熟悉的艺术创作小组不同,N12是一个展览集合小组。N12的展览没有主题、没有策展人,12个人以各自创作、集体参展的方式进行了他们的艺术实践。N12的名称来自马延红的建议,取英文字母“N”在数学上代表的项数,以及口语所寓意的“程度”及“未知”两个含义,指代无限的可能性。“绘画的12次方,12个人参展,提供12种绘画样式。没有统一的主题,但发现绘画有N次方可能。”

主要活动

2003年10月10日,在中央美术学院陈列馆举办首展“N12-第一回展”,展至10月19日。 王颉以参与者角度撰写文章《十二个自己》;尹吉男撰写评论《扑克牌游戏与零距离》。

2004年11月20日,在中央美术学院陈列馆举 办“N12-第二回展”,展至11月27日。倪军撰写评论《寻找自己跟这个世界的联系》。

2005年11月23日,在中央美术学院陈列馆举办“N12-第三回展”,展至11月28日。马延红在展览文字中提及此次展览有了投资人,这是有人关注到他们的一个积极信号。

2006年11月11日,在北京的西五艺术中心举办“N12-第四回展”,展至12月3日。韩之演撰写评论《从发现生活,到发现艺术》。

2007年-2013年,暂停群展,团队以聚会形式活动。

2014年1月16日,在北京公社举办“N12-第五回展”,展至3月15日。与前四回展览主要聚焦架上绘画不同,此次展览中展出了装置作品。王光乐谈到此次重聚想呈现另一种艺术小组的展览呈现与建构样貌。刘溪撰写评论《N12的文化地理学》。

2014年4月12日,在中国台北的大未来画廊举办“N12-第六回展”,展至5月4日。鲍栋 撰写展览评论《N12的故事》。

2023年7月12日,N12参加在中央美术学院美术馆举办的“团体作为方法——中央美术学院艺术团体研究与抽样展”,展至9月3日。展览将团体成立时的早期作品和近作共同展出。

成员访谈摘录及作品选登


王光乐:

我觉得N12的组织方式就是联邦制,需要决议的时候每个“州”都投一票,多数票即通过决策。更多的时候我就是这些决策的执行人,执行得最多的也是每年一次的展览派生的事务。12个个性不一的个体组合在一起,需要我这个善于妥协、年岁为长的人来做基础的服务。2003-2006年的N12,对我来说无异于又上了一次大学,以四次展览为中心,由 12 个亲近的人组成的又是四年的集体生活,抵消了融入社会给个体造成的边缘压力,舒缓了面向社会的现实感,也给自己延长了一次成熟期限。

在N12筹备期的2003年,成员们集体走访一些成员的工作室,一家一家的走,互相聊彼此的作品,我对那一次串联印象最深刻,那是我觉得青春用到最对的地方的时候。

王颉:

很多人不知道,N12的首展曾经计划在上海举办。20年前北京的画廊很少,而且2003年3月N12 成立,4月北京非典就开始了。我当时跑到了上海女朋友那,每天就到处闲逛看展。上海的画廊业起步早,那时已初具规模,我就和王光乐联系,商议先在上海做展览。

很快大家凑钱印了个简易画册,光乐寄给了我,这是N12最早的一本画册,只有10几本。我一家家画廊去跑,见了很多画廊主。情况各异,有的画廊想加进去自己的艺术家,有的想决定展览主题,也有的想对作品做挑选。这些有悖于N12展览的基本想法,因此并没有往下推进。

2003年7月初我回到北京,跑到油画系和马路老师说了N12的情况,马老师立刻联系了陈列馆的汤沛老师,请他帮忙。汤老师特别痛快,只象征性的收了几千元场地费,就把老美院陈列馆三层楼几千平米的空间交给我们使用,并且是10月份的黄金档期。我们的前三次展都是在陈列馆做的,这对N12的发展帮助非常大。

申亮:

N12最有意思的地方就在于它是一个没有什么共同目标非常松散的群体,平时都是各自做自己的艺术,有机会和条件就做一个没有主题的联展,就是这样的一个群体没想到在将近20 年里做了7次展览!今年第7次展览又是在美院美术馆,这和我们2003年第一次N12在老美院陈列馆的展览相隔了快20年,一个很好的轮回。

宋琨:

N12是我投入感情最多的一个集体,记得当时只要是老同学好朋友,我就攒局把大家聚一起喝酒聊天,哪怕吵架对峙都没关系,艺术的生活在那个时候最重要。

后来朋友带朋友,毕业还在做作品的、有共同语言且性格也合得来的就一起做展览了,其实比较即兴。

记得当时我从美院研究生毕业,工作和户口都不要了,平时教学生画画挣点房租和画具钱。大家聚完回去就各自闷头创作,N12成员基本一半都这么生活,各自独立又互相激励。在离开学校面对社会的那些年,N12其实给了大家一个港湾,有点小乌托邦的意思。

现在想想,虽然N12的开始看起来偶发,但那几年确实帮助了每一位去继续坚定地形成自己的艺术价值观。志同道合,人生有真切的感受。后来艺术市场商业的介入,越来越理性秩序化的展览机制让个体越来越独立,大家各自的生活方式也开始不同,N12慢慢脱离了最初的无动机偶发的阶段,这是历史规律的必然,虽然面对这个现实需要时间。

这些年慢慢习惯了大家各自奔天涯的伤感,今年再做N12展览,虽然人不全,但还是有回顾过去、忠实初心的愿望吧。

徐华翎:

N12成立之初,我们并没有设想过艺术小组的宣言或者理念。当时组成 N12 的成员基本就是玩在一起很好的朋友。那时候是策展人的时代,多是由他们去选择艺术家。但是我们尝试找了几位策展人,大部分都只对我们中的一部分艺术家感兴趣,而不是我们整体。后来我们索性不要策展人了。

N12对我的影响挺大的,每个人的感受可能不太一样,但其实大都受益良多。我多了很多好朋友,这些朋友是艺术和生活双方面的。12个人里我是画国画的,其它有画油画的、做装置的等等。每次的展览大家都很重视,都会把这一年最好的东西拿到这个展览上来,尽管有不足,也都尽力了。12 个人基本上刚开始是12种个性,12种风格,但在一起久了,互相影响是肯定的,到最后每个人都有变化,总的来说在艺术上都成熟了很多。

郝强:

起因就是做东西的人要做个展,找过好多地方,附中美术馆的李老师还帮过我们,后来美院的汤老师好像特别痛快地答应了,大伙请人家吃顿饭,现在人都走了。

印象比较深的事是一块儿去中国台湾,看见开了三代的牛肉面馆,他们招呼客人是真开心,夜市的摊主辛苦又自得,舒适的社会关系即使是表层的也是一种中国人该有的样儿,接着生活接着表达吧。

马延红:

我的美院附中时代是和N12友人一起有距离地成长起来的,在我思维最活跃的大学时代是和这些人中的几个人一起度过的。所以,N12当中有与我陪伴时间最长的友人,有大学时代密切交流的伙伴,还有毕业后十多年间聚会联络的同行……现在回看,我个人喜欢 N12 的地方是它让我感觉松散,艺术家彼此都很独立,又保持着联系,甚至更难得的是有些朋友直到现在仍能够比较深入的理性交流。

我重要的“艺术家肖像”系列作品中,亦有 N12 成员作为我作品叙事的主要人物出现。

梁远苇:

从2003年N12的第一次展览到2014年的第六回展览期间,我的画大概经历了几个阶段:2003-2007年形成了一个大致的方法论系统,2008-2011年我把它深入了,2012-2014年试图有所突破。

我早期绘画作品的框架可以说是对行为的记录。它的绘制方式是从空白画面的顶到底渐次推进完成,在底层颜色未干的时候画上层的图案,每个片段彼此相连而完成整张画面。绘画的行为过程在多大程度上独立于画面结果?这既是贯穿我创作中的矛盾,也是对绘画的认识观念上的矛盾。而我一直认为这些矛盾是作品的实验性所在,是令作品有意义并继续推进的可能。

杨静:

N12这个名称已经出现20年了,但是有时候念叨它的时候又觉得有点陌生。就像某些我们已经无比熟悉的汉字,在你长时间的注视下,它却变得面貌模糊了,变成一个非常陌生的字。这是我对N12的感觉。

它像一个无声无息的陪伴者,跟随着我们这白驹过隙的20年时光,偶尔,让我们在时间的奔流里抽身出来,停留那么片刻,回望一下身后的路。

温凌:

我记得最初参加 N12第二回展览时,当时我没有什么其他展览和卖作品的机会,特别看重这个展览,抱的期望也很大。布展时本来分了我一个特好的展位,后来又说要调整,给我换一偏些的。我当时别扭的不行,就闹情绪什么的。展览开幕后没能卖作品,也没有画廊找我合作,我当时特失望。但是到了十年后,心态完全变了,展位给我分哪儿都行,作品没有销售也无所谓,主要是为大家能再次集结而感到高兴。其实这个过程,说明N12的目的已经发生更改了,N12最初成立的目的(当时大家没有展览和卖作品的机会,希望自己制造一个机会),这个很功能性的目的已经随着 2005 年艺术市场突然火爆而快速完成了。现在的目的变成了同学联谊。

从第一回展览开始,我们在一块儿就不聊艺术,都是聊的吃喝玩乐,现在聊的是孩子和养生。最近做展览,收集老照片,我把一些照片拿出来,大家都觉得挺感人的。

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

Article II

Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
