展览研究 | 肖怀德:虚身棱境

本次展览的原端构想来自于2021年的一个下午,艺术家耿雪与我的一次通话,在通话中,耿雪敏锐地感受到生命—技术—自然这三重关系正在发生微妙的重构,似乎有一层新的介质,像“棱镜”一样,错置了自我、身体与世界之间的“三位一体”的知觉关系。我当时正在略显嘈杂的商场,努力躲在一个隐秘的角落,聆听着耿雪的描述:“我感觉‘自我’在晃动”、“‘感觉’时常处于眩晕状态,不再那么确信什么是真实的‘知觉’,哪是‘错觉’?”、“身体与自然之间的感应不再那么通畅,甚至有种身体的‘自噬感’”......

这次展览我们希望抛出这样一个话题:“在技术和媒介环境加速迭代的境遇下,技术媒介如何影响身体与观察的互动机制,以及自我、身体与外部世界的知觉反馈。”新的技术环境正在重塑人类的知觉经验,也在塑造我们对外部世界的感知方式与反馈机制。

这种新的知觉反馈机制形成,有多重因素的影响和触发:比如,有新的技术软件的发明所携带的命令,有人与自然世界之间互动经验的变化,有城市化进程中的隐匿的技术座架,有人类对自身知觉的新的科学探索与认知升维,新的技术支撑的社会治理和“生命政治”形态等。“虚身”与“具身”相对,是对人类身体的微观介质和感知能力变化的隐喻,指人处在身体“在场”与“不在场”的即时切换之中,人类身体的“具实性”正在面临挑战。“棱境”与“灵境”相对,如果说“灵境”是一个万物有灵、生生不息的世界,是一个人类意识、身体与自然万物相通的境遇,“棱境”则是一个经过技术屏幕“折射”化的倒影和错置。

新的科学探索,生物技术、基因技术、脑神经科学和量子力学等,正在不断刷新我们原有的对生命个体的认知,以及个体与世界关系的认知,揭示出人类依托感知系统所感知的世界的有限性,大量的外部世界的组成超出了人类感知反馈的边界。我们很难再凭直观或者以往的旧知识去确认自身的存在状态,以及知觉的可信度。因为科学技术进步对身体内部和外部世界的探索和揭示所带来的知识增长,并没有因此减少人类的未知。耿雪的《索拉里斯星》以一种科幻式的无重力悬浮感的隐喻,以及神经元交流影像和昆虫标本的对话,揭示了人类思维的局限和自然物质世界的无限性。耿雪的另一件作品《圣殿》以“宗教般穹顶”的象征,揭示出现代医疗技术对身体内部的“探底”,却生成了一种身体的“反噬”,反而隐射出“造人”环节的神秘性和人类身体的浩瀚宇宙感。李尚儒的《证明此处存在一只不可见的兔子》,用人造机械装置模仿兔子掀栏、啄食,提示人的知觉在技术环境下的“迷惑性”。甘浩宇的《蚯蚓三味》以非视觉感知世界的动物—蚯蚓为观察投射,提示了现代技术世界中对人类视觉感官的无限强化,反而造成了人类感知自然世界的某种遮蔽。

新的技术屏幕形成的镜像投射,是一个隐蔽而不可见的中介,塑造着人对外部世界的感知形态,人逐渐主动放弃了直接的知觉经验,而更加倚重和依赖屏幕投射。这种技术中介作用,正在使人类与真实自然世界的感知通道逐渐“堵塞”和“迟钝”。镜像棱境正在营造一种真实的“错觉”,“身临其境”正在替代“身体在场”,“影像经验”模糊了“具身经验”的感受,“图像”取代了“印象”,世界不再敞开而逐渐走向封闭,意志的投射正在替代“他者”的外部性。时子媛的《捕捉》,讨论了在居家隔离和身体被限制的状况下,人处在极度“无聊”中,视觉感知追随动态对象的即时反应,探讨了视觉感知的本能性,视觉观看的权力关系,以及身体被限制下的“视觉逃逸”的反抗机制。

新的技术环境下生产的各类新软件,其背后却隐藏着一种集体的意志,我们必须按照规则去使用软件,这正在形成一种隐蔽的命令和意志,造成一种主体性的幻象,或者说是“自我的晃动”。无处不在的信息,信息的源头和客观性已经无法追寻,我们只能接受携带着立场和意志的信息,这是谁的意志?人在何种意义上处在自由选择的状态?又是谁在替我们做决定?石若宜的影像作品《鱼腹中书》讨论了信息的不信任机制,对人类传递的言语的真实可信性的怀疑,以及言语的拼接、组合、改变词义正在造成误解、接受信息的选择性丢弃和保留。《琀》中的“吞咽”意味着独立表达权力的主动出让。陈昭辰的《人类世界生活指南》中Ai技术对人类生活细节的“深度学习式”的指令描述,以一种“反向凝视”的方式在指引着人类对自身生活的认知,到底是人类在学习AI,还是AI在学习人类?变得模糊不清,这无形中揭示了新技术环境下的人类普遍的“自我幻觉”。陈昭辰的另一件作品《捉月亮》,将拍摄的月亮图像投影到笼子里,通过屏幕中介的转换和“生成性”的运动,隐喻我们生活中无处不在的视错觉假象。

新的技术感知设备,VR、AR、元宇宙,正在拓展人的感知边界,重新定义身体,人的身体性在技术的武装下,边界在延伸,身体与外部世界的边界日益模糊。杨艺的《Gaze Machine》模糊了身体表面的边界,挑战了自主身体的概念,模糊了实质身体与虚拟身体的界限。

随动系统、镜子、网络摄像头

城市化进程中的网格化的技术基础设施,营造了一种现代城市的集体化生活的自由乌托邦,同时也以隐性规训的方式阻隔着生活世界向自然世界的敞开。陈旭的《作为一种强度结构的理由》以瓦楞纸的结构对应城市高密度建筑群落,指涉人类城市生活空间在精密度的材料结构和物流技术支撑下,所形成的狭小封闭性、高度均质化,同时导致个体自身的脆弱性和对身体的隐性规训。这种集体性的、幽闭性的均质生活正被更快的城市交通、更高的建筑物,更便捷的人际沟通等城市基础技术设施所掩饰,营造出虚幻的大城市生活的自由和空间想象。陈旭的另一件作品《灼,至最后一刻》使用最早摄影术发明时的一种暗房显影法,将紫外线捕蚊器直接接触显影在画纸上,以达到对“飞蛾扑火”的浪漫想象的反讽,呈现飞蚊的令人毛骨悚然的死亡景观,隐喻自然世界甚至人类社会,个体生存的残酷现实。

有趣的是,我们的8位艺术家处在中国、美国等不同的地理时空区域,透过他们的作品,我们也许能发现,无论是权力意志,还是屏幕中介投射,呈现出不同区域的生命政治、生命处境图景,以及隐蔽的政治、技术权力和命令差异。我想我们的境遇,一方面我们正在放弃我们的具身感知,丧失与大地的连接。同时,我们又过于依赖我们的身体,如果是一个个原子化的个体,我们的中心无法脱离我们的身体,我们必然是以自己的局部视角来思考世界。只有一种可能,人与人围成一团簇拥在一起,形成一个个社区共同体,形成一个整体,我们的中心才能真正意义上脱离我们的身体,才会把其他生命当成与人平等的生命,人才有可能摆脱“个体无法托起自己的头发离开地面”,摆脱“人类中心主义”的困境。

I fully agree to CAFA Art Museum (CAFAM) submitting to CAFA for publication the images, pictures, texts, writings, and event products (such as works created during participation in workshops) related to me from my participation in public events (including museum member events) organized by the CAFA Art Museum Public Education Department. CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
