讲座综述 | 余丁:韦启美的艺术人生

2023年12月14日,“为时代持笔——韦启美百年诞辰纪念展”系列学术活动的第一场专题讲座“为时代持笔——韦启美的艺术人生”于美术馆学术报告厅举行,讲座由此次展览的策展人——中央美术学院艺术管理与教育学院院长、(中法)艺术与设计管理学院院长余丁教授主讲,中央美术学院美术馆直属党支部书记韩文超主持。出席本次讲座的有韦启美先生之子韦浒生老师、中央美术学院人文学院美术史系曹庆晖教授,以及众多来自校内校外的观众。

讲座伊始,主持人韩文超书记提到,“韦启美百年诞辰纪念展”是“百年辉煌·中央美术学院艺术名家”系列中的重要展览,由党委宣传部、油画系和美术馆三方共同承办。此次展览的策展人余丁教授从学生时代便展开了对韦启美先生的研究;在之前的十年间,余丁教授策划了两次关于韦启美先生的展览,分别是2013年的“韦启美的素描课”展览和2016年的“社会百科全书——韦启美漫画作品展”展览。在正展出的“为时代持笔——韦启美百年诞辰纪念展”中,余丁教授呈现了他对韦启美先生全面且深入的研究成果,力图让大家了解一个更丰富、更多元、更鲜活的韦启美先生。

本次展览的策展人、艺术管理与教育学院院长、(中法)艺术与设计管理学院院长余丁讲座

在讲座的开头,余丁教授提出了老一代艺术家的人生信念:每一个人在时代的大潮当中都有自己的角色和定位。韦先生在中央美术学院的教育教学和创作经历具有独特性。韦启美在1947年得徐悲鸿应允来到美院任教,对靳尚谊这一代的美院学生有很大的影响,靳尚谊先生至今还记得他第一次看到韦启美先生的《模范饲养员》的感受。同时,韦启美先生留下来大量手稿,这些手稿使我们得以了解他的教学方法与创作思考,同时也体现了中央美术学院老一代艺术家对教学和艺术的严谨与尊重。

余丁教授回顾了他以策展推动对韦启美先生展开学术研究的过程。他介绍道,策划的第一个关于韦先生的展览是“韦启美的素描课”,第二个展览是“社会百科全书——韦启美漫画作品展”;此次的展览是对韦先生艺术历程的回顾和总结,旨在向观众全面介绍韦启美,在前两个展览的基础上勾画出韦启美艺术人生的图景。

余丁教授谈到展览标题“为时代持笔”的来源,一是源于韦启美先生于1984年写过一篇文章《与时代同步——一个持画笔的人的断想》,一是源于康定斯基在《论艺术的精神》中说到作为一个艺术家需具有个性与风格、反映时代和对艺术语言本体发展有所贡献三个层次,余丁教授从这两个方面出发提出这一主题。

艺术人生

在对展览结构和内容进行介绍之前,余丁教授先简要地带领观众回看了韦先生过往重要的艺术活动年表。

韦启美于1923年出生在安徽安庆,1942年从湖南国立第八中学毕业,考进中央大学艺术系,受业于徐悲鸿、黄显之、吕斯百等先生。韦启美与同是中央大学艺术系的戴泽关系密切,两人常互相画像。


对于韦启美早年在中大接受的艺术训练,余丁教授从韦先生的回忆中找到了诸多细节,比如韦启美在《忆跟徐师学油画》文章中说“就这样画!”这是徐悲鸿对韦启美“摆”的笔法的肯定。韦启美在另外一篇文章《生命到处闪光——忆徐悲鸿先生有关教学几件事》里面详细记录了徐先生对他早期习作的指导。

从中大毕业后,韦启美的艺术创作和教学实践与中央美术学院的发展紧紧结合在一起。1947年,韦启美前往北平国立艺专担任助教,主要教授素描和油画。1949年,“中华全国文学艺术工作者代表大会美术展览会”(即“第一届全国美展”)举办,韦启美的油画《儿子立了功》入选参展。1950年北平国立艺专改名为中央美术学院,他任教于绘画系,继续教素描。余丁教授展示了韦启美先生在上世纪50年代的若干张老照片,这些老照片记录了诸多宝贵片段,比如韦启美与戴泽前往密云水库劳动,共同绘制大幅作品《密云水库畅想图》,韦启美在1951年进行了革命历史题材创作《三湾改编》。1980年粉碎四人帮以后,中央美院恢复了画室制度,韦启美跟靳尚谊一起主持油画系第一工作室。1993年从油画系退休。2009年7月7日于北京逝世。

展览内容

余丁教授对展览标题中的“时代”二字进行了相应的解释说明:时代是时间的更迭,是身份的变化、认知的提高,是观念的转变,也是知识的更新,也是技术的变革,以及对于更加广阔浩瀚宇宙的探索。艺术随时代发展是为了面向更广阔的道路。“与时代同步,为时代持笔”是韦启美这一代人的理想,对韦启美而言,他的一生完全沉浸在艺术的海洋之中。

“以油画著称、以漫画闻名、以素描立身、以水墨养生”,这二十个字很好地概括了韦启美的艺术人生,此次展览也展出了相关作品。展览共分为七个版块,分别为“先知后觉”“现实关照”“现代转向”“生活诗意”“水墨探索”“素描哲理”“漫画百科”。余丁教授通过对这七个版块的介绍以及版块相关作品的探讨,带领观众深度走进展览。

 

先知后觉

在介绍该版块时,余丁教授首先从《模范饲养员》谈起。《模范饲养员》参加了1957年全国青年美术工作者作品展览会(即第一届全国青年美展)。余丁教授谈及韦启美先生在《一个持画笔的人的断想》中对“喜剧性油画”创作的一些想法:《模范饲养员》是一幅喜剧性油画。喜剧性必须幽默,而幽默常来自某个“情理之中意料之外”的细节,这细节是真实的生活,却突破了事物的常规,因之才具有某种新的意义。


余丁教授向观众展示了一些先前未发表过的油画作品,如《广场上的马戏团》《中山公园》。《广场上的马戏团》呈现了韦先生生活在北京多年的深刻记忆,画面上用色点勾勒的几千人的热闹场面十分精妙。

同时,余丁教授重点提及《初春》这一幅油画作品。展览首次展出了《初春》的油画小稿。《初春》作为一幅现实主义作品,却将原本轰轰烈烈的运动表现成一个安静、自然的场景。余丁教授指出,韦先生自60年代便显现出了他在油画创作上的个人风格和语言,他笔下的时代都是轰轰烈烈的,但画面很安静,没有口号、没有横幅、没有红旗招展。韦先生将平凡的人放到画布上,让这些平凡的人透视那个伟大的时代、那个轰轰烈烈的时代。

 

现实关照

在“现实关照”版块,余丁教授将重心放在了作品《青纱帐里游击队员逞英豪》的创作过程上。余丁教授通过展示韦启美先生创作《青纱帐里游击队员逞英豪》时所作的素描稿,强调造型能力在艺术创作中的重要作用,并通过韦启美先生创作《青纱帐里游击队员逞英豪》时探究中西结合方法的相关手稿,说明艺术创作也离不开综合的修养。“现实关照”版块体现了韦启美先生作为一个老艺术家在其时代的现实主义创作能力。


 

现代转向

余丁教授认为,“现代转向”版块是韦启美先生的油画创作中最重要的部分,也是对新一代油画家影响最大的部分。该版块集中展现了韦先生80-90年代的油画作品,余丁教授真诚地分享了他看到这么多油画作品的感受:韦启美先生的作品是对身边事物近距离的描绘和感知,并用最简洁的方式进行描绘,这种方式也影响了新生代油画家的创作。

在接下来,余丁教授列举了该版块部分油画作品并进行详细阐释,通过对油画作品的深入分析,使观众更加深入地理解韦启美先生的油画作品在80-90年代的风格发展。

《实验室》创作于1979年,此展览前未有发表和展出,画的是电子研究所科研人员与作为背景的粒子加速器。余丁教授直言,当他这次看到这幅画,才能意识到那个时代我国物理学领域研究的相关成就,而韦启美先生身为一个艺术家,通过大量的阅读和对新事物的热爱,及时捕捉到这一时代讯息,创作出了这幅作品。

《飞往北京的班机上》展现了80年代农村改革下对“新农民”形象塑造的探索。将农民安置在知识分子与外国人之中,通过简单排列的侧面像,反映出一个时代的巨变。邵大箴先生在《第三代中国油画家研究——韦启美》中写道:“不像农民的农民是一种新型富有智慧和开拓精神的农民,是在大变革中出现的一种“新人”形象。画家的初衷是要塑造一个时代的新人,是要表现一个农民大国的现代觉醒。”

接着,余丁教授谈到构成韦启美先生风格语言独特的两个关键词——“简约”与“诗意”,并辅以一系列作品进行阐释说明。

《新线》展现出了新时期对艺术创作的召唤。在这一时期,韦启美从现实主义创作方式转向了对绘画本体语言的表达,其用线条、形体与色彩构成简约的画面,具体中又蕴含着抽象。余丁教授对此十分感慨,他说,在同样接受西方现代艺术的影响与冲击下,韦启美先生能够吸收、理解现代艺术,并在作品中展现出新的风格,这说明对艺术的理解离不开长期的积淀。

在谈到《附中的走廊》时,余丁教授认为这件作品为我们提供了更多的关于隐喻、超现实主义的理想、断想。附中走廊拱形的楼道,建立起了符号、隐喻、示意的作用。韦启美先生画油画用减法多,用加法少。《附中的走廊》就是对原型减了复加,加了更减,故而引发观者联想、表达简约与诗意。

《提琴的故事》是韦启美先生对2023年的畅想,余丁教授谈及这幅画时也十分感慨,韦启美先生在想象的画面上描绘了今年这块土地上的情景,体现了他对未来、对不可知事物的向往与想象。

《水上》于1989年参加人体艺术大展,画面描绘跳水的人体,具有强烈的形式语言。韦启美也提到:“人体绝对不是一个人体,而是一个有意味的形式符号。同样参加人体艺术大展的还有《魔术师》。

余丁教授认为,《为了新的高度》是韦先生在画面视觉上展现的一个难以企及的“新高度”,运动员越过的高度已不符合现实,是韦先生对自己感受的描绘。

在鉴赏韦启美先生的油画作品时,余丁教授强调“抒情性”在其油画作品中的重要体现。

《早,小蜜蜂》在画面处理上有意减去了不必要的东西,只有一个小女孩、一根水管、一个水池加上一点蜜蜂,使得画面极具形式感和画面简约、诗意风格的追求。《母与子》《包裹》也是如此。

《在108路电车的起点站》创作于1998年,余丁教授从画面图像出发,认为画面展现的两代不同的人以及画面的图像构成了某种象征型和神秘的氛围,引人遐想。

 

生活诗意

在这一版块,余丁教授将韦启美先生所绘的一些生活片段整合起来,并使观众理解,韦启美先生描绘生活,却不完全写实,而是看到了画面现实当中那些点线面的形式逻辑在画面上的呈现。生活琐碎要在画面上形成一个简约的美的逻辑,就要做减法。这是他创作思想当中很重要的一个方面。

《鸡冠花》是韦先生晚年阶段所作的花卉写生作品,从中可见其仍有极好的色彩感觉与色彩概括能力。

 

水墨探索

“水墨探索”通过一系列水墨作品展现了韦先生在水墨语言上的探索。余丁教授谈到在策展过程中作品安置的构思:将《江雪》的油画和《秋林》的纸本进行对比,突出韦启美先生在水墨画中运用素描的造型与光影特征,并在油画中借鉴水墨的语言、笔法的创作特点。余丁教授简要介绍了多张水墨作品,包括《骤雨》《早春》《初夏》《树旁小舟》《地边》《山顶上》等。

 

素描哲理

余丁教授回溯了“韦启美的素描课”展览。从韦启美先生关于素描教学的手稿中提取出了素描创作的五大要点,全面说明了韦启美先生对素描创作的基本要求,体现了美院老先生对创作严谨认真的态度,同时也影响着美院一代又一代学生的创作。


 

漫画百科

余丁教授对韦启美先生的漫画创作极度重视,他认为,谈论韦启美的艺术人生,就必须谈到他的漫画。韦启美的漫画作品体量巨大。其漫画内容都来源于他对生活的关注和对报刊、杂志等书籍的广泛阅读。“社会百科全书”旨在说明韦启美漫画创作涉及范围之广,其包含了政治、经济、生活、文体、环卫多个方面。漫画创作开辟了韦启美作为艺术家的思维的广度,将许多油画无法表达的事物用漫画体现,开辟了新的出口。

总结

本次讲座,余丁教授从展览出发,按照展览的顺序从素描、油画、漫画多个角度展现了一个与众不同的韦启美,也展现了一个与时代同步、为时代持笔的画家的样貌。同时,展览使观众了解到一个经历了解放前的民国、新中国建设、改革开放、经济腾飞的韦启美,他见证时代更迭,并每一次都站在了时代的前列,用他自己的方式来与这个时代同步,创作出属于时代的作品。

在讲座末,余丁教授重点强调,每个时代都有每个时代的特点,不论身处何时,都应为时代来持笔,表达这个时代的精神面貌。同时,余丁教授对新一代美院学生提出要求,要继承老先生们传下来的精神,向韦先生以及美院的老先生们致敬,坚守追求,不忘初心,坚持真理。


现场问答


在最后的答疑环节中,余丁教授对观众提出的问题作了细致的解答。

韩文超老师首先提出疑问:在同一时代下,为什么韦先生能够处于引领性、代表性的地位?他是如何对自己前期的积累进行转换的?

余丁教授对此问题作了详细解答,他首先指出,艺术家若是持续创作宏大叙事题材,会陷入创作的范式,而韦先生的创作一直沿着他生活之路展开,使其能够在新时代对创作进行更多探索。余丁教授以《新线》《电话亭》等作品为例,说明韦先生在生活中通过大量的阅读,提炼出生活的简约与诗意,并体现在他的画面之中,形成新的绘画语言。而他对艺术的大胆尝试,也使他的作品在那个时代呈现出引领性、代表性。

在场的观众也提出了一些问题。

问题1:展览“现代转向”展厅中间用展台单独陈设一些油画作品的小稿,有没有想过把小稿放在作品旁边进行对照?

余丁教授回答道,这个展览的主旨是要让观众认识到韦启美先生是一个什么样的人,且此次展览大量集中展示了许多油画作品,为了保证观众的关注点聚焦于油画作品上,小稿便被单独放在展厅中间的柜子里。这是基于展览所传达的主旨和观众观展所接受到的信息所作出的考量。

问题2:修补过的《广场上的马戏团》使人感受到梦幻,而原作是否也能给予人相同的感受?

余丁教授从绘画中色彩的规律对此进行详细阐释。修复师在修复油画作品时会依照色彩的补色来进行修补,这是基于绘画色彩规律而做出的最大的还原。

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

CAFA Art Museum Publication Authorization Agreement

I fully agree to CAFA Art Museum (CAFAM) submitting to CAFA for publication the images, pictures, texts, writings, and event products (such as works created during participation in workshops) related to me from my participation in public events (including museum member events) organized by the CAFA Art Museum Public Education Department. CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

Article II

Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.
