“万有引力”展览研讨会、工作坊活动回顾

第二期“广角°青年实验项目空间”的首个展览“万有引力”——陈明强个人作品展于2023年10月24日至11月13日期间顺利举办。展览选择了陈明强新近创作与未曾展出的共14件作品,溯其创作思考的流变与关联,对材料本体与艺术再造之间的诸微妙处作出翻译,力图展现其个人创作思考与艺术面貌的新象。围绕展览主题,展览团队陆续举办了一次研讨会、一场儿童公共教育工作坊及六场公众导览活动。

2023年11月5日,“广角°青年实验项目空间”第二期首回展览 “万有引力”随展学术研讨会“艺术的力道”如期举行。出席本次研讨会专家学者有中央美术学院实验艺术与科技艺术学院院长冯梦波老师,中央美术学院博士生导师章燕紫老师,中央美术学院文艺评论研究中心副主任、艺术管理与教育学院教授刘礼宾老师,中央美术学院副教授、硕士生导师葛玉君老师,中央美术学院副研究员、中央美院艺讯网执行主编朱莉老师,策展人段少峰及中央美术学院实验艺术与科技艺术学院青年教师陈明强老师。本次研讨会分上下两场,分别由本次展览的两位青年策展人陈哩尔、权文熙担任学术召集并主持。

展览联合策展人、中央美术学院艺术管理与教育学院青年教师陈哩尔博士主持开场,首先介绍了与会的嘉宾学者,同时介绍了本次活动的由来及主旨。她表示,本次研讨会从“万有引力——陈明强个人展”的作品出发,围绕“艺术的力道”这一无形感受,邀请多位艺术家、批评家及策展人延伸探讨艺术作品生成的多维角度,追问艺术的力道是如何塑造我们所在的世界并反思艺术刺激人们阐发新思的过程,期望通过这次研讨会能激励青年艺术家继续追索艺术世界中存在的多重关系,拓宽对于艺术创作、艺术本质及作品与观者相互关系的认知。

本次展览体量很小,但质量很高,展览从作品面貌、策展思路、展示陈列到展览评论都让人感到惊喜。当下给予于青年教师创作和青年策展人实践的资源并不多,而“万有引力”展览团队积极把握难得的机会,进行用心的探索,呈现独特的面貌。

陈明强的作品特别能突出他个人的性格,我们能从他的作品中看到脚踏实地的精神,也能感受到他在心如止水与志存高远间的张力,其作品中体现的是一种宁静致远的力。明强对自己创作的思路把握是清晰的,在这回展览中,作品与展览叙事形成有机呼应,于朴素的表达中传递出不寻常的力量。陈明强个人作品体现的转变也呼应了学院教学各方面的变化,面向着一种向未来生长的趋势,但同时也正是各种试错,“未来”并非一蹴而就,需要更多这样有热情也有想法的艺术实践,这也是当下我们义不容辞的责任。

陈明强所谓的“笨拙”是艺术家最珍贵的东西。我们看了这么多的作品和展览,“聪明”的东西太多了,而“笨拙”的作品是在细细体会中脚踏实地而来的,是真诚的。个人语言的形成不是设计出来的,而是在艺术生态的基壤上一点点生长的,过于“聪明”的表达会脱离这种根基,形成不太切实际的怪异表达。目前,我们所面对的艺术创作的环境是十分复杂的,但这对于艺术创作者来说是个很好的契机:不易形成很直白的语言,需要大量思考。作品只在家中或工作室的一隅之地是沉默无声的,只有来到公共空间才能产生反馈,这是调整个人创作的关键时刻。年轻艺术家需要这样的场所。本次展览场地选用的小而精的场所是恰到好处的。

中央美术学院文艺评论研究中心副主任、艺术管理与教育学院教授刘礼宾发言

现在我们看到的很多是把观念做成图像,实现一种视觉化转译。很多艺术家的悟性也很好,但有时总给人一种“撞车”之感。相较于说是抄袭,或许说是创作过程中其本身的感知和观念问题更恰当。陈明强有观念和转化,但他是真正地把艺术创造的过程和观点激活了,他有一个执着的创作方式,作品间形成了脉络。陈明强是实验艺术第一届本科生,可以说能从明强身上看见实验艺术在美术学院的发展。明强的本科作品很有意思,他利用了很笨的方法制作出了一个相机,但很真诚,很自洽。明强以这种“笨拙”的踏实感坚持创作,反而避免了这样的争议。

关于“艺术的力道”,我一直也在思索“道”为何,90年代有个著名展览叫《图像的力量》,从前总是强调当代艺术的有意义性,在我看来,批判和作品的有效性是一体两面的。事实上秩序模式和作品明确性反而使作品本身作为“艺术”的价值涣散。但同时,艺术家在做的也并非“玄学”之事,就像明强早起的焊接作品,它的体量能构成展场的一部分,有着非常明确的在场有效性,但其将生活体悟向创作的转化表达又保持了一种微妙,这正是艺术作品的有趣之处。

本次展览中,两位策展人也将他的语言探索和状态的创作脉络夸张开来,又形成一种展览之于艺术家及其艺术表达的力道,把陈明强的另一个层次揪了出来,把握得很好。

我最早对陈明强有印象就是他的“盔甲”作品,在整个展场中可谓独树一帜。陈明强作品在观念和材料上不断更新,他有借力发力的融通性,也即跨学科的尝试。他的作品中有种“共时观”,例如《天使412.21》是对电焊工艺的综合运用,又让人联想到美术史中未来主义对时间维度的重视;《流星雨》等作品也不仅是视觉物象上的表现,也有不可见的关联。他的创作中潜在隐含着丰富且多层级的问题丛,能让人在第一时间触发敏感的神经,进而引发深层次的“共情”。

明强作品的观念性很强,但同时也并未忽视技术性和匠人精神。正如本次展览观念来源的“鸟粪事件”,他把自然现象变成了艺术表达,他对鸟粪掉在画面上这一事件的转化无论是感官上,还是细节层面,都吸引了观众的眼球。在这里,作者与作品之间,并非主客二元对立,而是"相互激发"“互为主体”。他以一种似乎置身事外又身处其中的方式挖掘自己的创作,在抽离放大之后进行再思考。这不仅需要不断地反思,更需要探索的勇气和方法。

我对明强的作品一直以来是非常熟悉的,我和他是老同学,他让我最感慨的是他展现出了我们这一类人的状态和命运,我借这次机会想要讨论青年青年教师在美院的生存状态,以及这个阶段年轻人的人生状态,是如何在各种各样的无形的、无名的力的裹挟下走到了今天。

明强有一股辩证的韧劲,并不软弱,也不死板。正如创作中那个鸟屎事件,对于不可抗力的发生,他并非表现出一种无力回天的妥协或绝不转弯地倔强。他是在思索之后逐渐与该事件“和解”,在其中发现了“偶发性”的有趣,这个关键点也成为解读他作品的一把钥匙。作为实验艺术专业最早的毕业生,明强的创作十分能代表早期实验艺术人的创作标准。他们有一套非常完整的基于社会学和田野调查方法的教学计划,他从对厕所涂鸦的调查,到《新中国结婚证书图像研究》,再到《爱甲》等作品,给人留下深刻印象,非常强调“社会介入”,符合人们对“实验艺术”的想象,我们能从明强的脉络作品中体会到他作为一个实验艺术的学生对那套学院“当代性”与“实验性”标准的坚持。

之后,在不断反思中明强也逐渐形成了个人特色。展览的入口处放置了一个铁金属材料的作品《天使412.21》,是一块重412.21克的陨铁,也为展览定了一个基调——他这些年一直深入物质材料的探索。但是这件金属作品和十多年前的《国挺一号——机枪相机》及可穿戴装置《爱甲》还不一样,早期是对金属材料和电焊的方式感兴趣,后来他开始探索一种堆焊工艺,真正将偶发性注入到作品里,有一种可延展的未知感。此外,展厅里的陶泥实验也让人耳目一新,弹弓击打的那一刻不仅是形变,也是对经典和制度的破坏与重建。他近期的几个系列作品都统摄在“时间性”的不断生发之中,也都有人工力和自然力的互相作用。因而他的创作实践是在不断“接受”和“逃离”的,除了学院教授的方法论之外,他逐渐脱离“实验艺术式”的创作路径去寻找自己的方法。

到了这个年龄,他也有了一种释然,明白了人生的不确定性。他的创作估计包含了一条明显做减法的过程,创作动机也在变化。教学经验与人生阅历的增长,让他觉知对先锋艺术家或某一类创作方法的追随虽然容易获得成功,但却是一种没有温度的观念,充满了智力炫耀,或制造视觉愉悦的投机性,他想要靠自己去寻找答案,回答“什么是艺术”的本质性问题,这是他后来创作的一个主要驱动力。这个展览虽然小,但是有深意,它展现了一个勤勤恳恳的创作者的白皮书,书写了一个青年艺术家在寻找创作方向的过程中,如何探寻真实自我的历程。作为每个微弱的个体,其实摇摆不定才是生命的常态,也是生活和创作的真实。

策展人、撰稿人段少锋发言

明强老师一直处于一种和谐但似乎又有些艰苦的状态,在当下这种集体性焦虑的语境中,明强的这种“一直”显得更加难能可贵。他的作品无论从经验还是到切身的体会都是自己的,是相当真实的。80后艺术家历经了中国艺术的各种阶段,观念的转变如风云巨变,近来也有例如“国际媚俗”之类的话题,文章观点层出不穷。陈明强的每一次我都在场,从小组到个人,再从工作方法实验艺术田野调查,再到现在的这些作品,你真的从外界回到了你自己。艺术市场带来的各种问题似乎在明强这里都有些失效,他继承着学院派的扎实基本功,在概念的选取上又不似当下浮躁语境下各种急于求成的投机取巧,十分难能可贵。

本次对谈中,各位嘉宾就陈明强的创作生涯和本次“万有引力”展的整体情况展开讨论,提出宝贵建议。陈明强在本次会谈最后对各位与会人员表示真挚的感谢,他也时常反思:为什么大家眼里他是“苦”的?他希望自己能体现出的是一种积极的精神状态,而且举例《天使412.21》作品说到,“我做作品过程中,大多时候是放空的,虽然过程付出了劳动,会疲惫,但内心更多的是平和。电焊对身体伤害很大,我当时做完《金汤》展览后去体检发现了肺里多了几个结节。可是电焊过程是温暖的,并且那种光芒产生的幻觉会给人带来希望,我很喜欢这种感觉,很享受这个过程。”其艺术创作体现出自我与世界的引力关系,对精神需求的追逐也是能帮助他不断突破局限边界的。随年龄增长和认知的拓宽,从学生变成教师,从小孩变为父亲,在人与人的交往中不断加深着对人、对世界、对自我的认知,这些认识的加深也最终都投映在了艺术创作之中。

探寻·星空——儿童创作工作坊

星空不仅是科学研究的对象,也是哲学思考与创造力的灵感源泉。2023年11月12日,中央美术学院美术馆公共教育部联合“万有引力”展览团队招募10组亲子家庭开展了一次儿童创作工作坊。孩子们在艺术家陈明强的引导下,通过混合不同的颜色和技巧,用油画颜料混合、叠加,创造独特的星空画作,捕捉星空中不同星体的光谱和颜色,在画布上创造独一无二的浩瀚星空,以艺术的方式表现宇宙的奥秘。

正如贯穿于展览中的不具名之力与意外之力,本次工作坊的精髓在于体验惊喜和意外,鼓励孩子们将科技性的观察与艺术的创造力相结合,留出空间让偶然与惊喜成为他们创作的一部分,仿佛宇宙中的每一颗星星都蕴藏着无限的故事,等待被我们发现并表达。

The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
