“我的观看”——大卫·霍克尼中央美术学院学术讲座记录



前言:当我们猛然遭遇他的画面并被一种不同寻常的空间感所悬置,伴随着惊讶与不适而产生的,往往是对艺术家的怀疑,而不是我们自己。继而又不得不在画面中持续地转动眼球,一寸一寸地放置我们的目光。对于中国观众来说,很快就会发现这是一种极为熟悉的观看体验:散点,以及缓慢地移动。在移动中,大卫·霍克尼画面中七倒八歪的任何一把椅子都独立存在,正如中国古代卷轴绘画中的任何一皴草木。此次大卫·霍克尼时隔三十四年再度来访中央美术学院,以“我的观看”为题进行讲座,正是要亲自为中国观众解释其作品中的“观看之道”。


下午三点多钟,距离讲座开始还有三个小时,中央美院美术馆报告厅已经候满了等待讲座的观众。与此同时,美术馆报告厅外场、学校北区礼堂、F1-109教室也在同时进行视频直播。


讲座于下午18点30分正式开始。中央美术学院美术馆馆长王璜生先生主持了本场讲座。他追溯了1981年霍克尼先生首次来访中央美术学院并与邵大箴先生进行交流的往事,介绍了霍克尼先生对中国绘画尤其卷轴画的浓厚兴趣,并最后代表中央美术学院全体师生对霍克尼先生的到来表示欢迎与感谢。



讲座直奔主题,霍克尼将于下个月在伦敦举办展览的作品图片已经出现在大屏幕上。

理念:“ 透视应该被扭转”(“perspective should be reversed”)

霍克尼提出为现场观众展示其最近的创作,而非已被熟悉的作品,这似乎很符合他对艺术创作的一贯态度。在一幅作品之中,完全不符合透视关系的人物形象被独立地分散于画面,几幅运用了相似技法的“画中画”同样独立地分布于画面所绘空间的墙壁上。在他看来,这样的创作被定义为“照片建构起来的图像”,因为每一个局部都是由分别拍摄的照片所形成的。更为重要的是,这种随意的拼贴无法保证其焦点的唯一性,而这恰恰是霍克尼所追求的。画面中的几行字赫然写着: 透视应该被反过来。(“perspective should be reversed”)

他认为,与“近大远小”的准确透视相比,反其道而行之则更为真实。他随即向观众展示了用反透视的方法创作的一组“打纸牌的人”。这些作品由几个人物和简单的场景构成,有一面敞开地面向观看者,而观看的位置相对于静止的画面来说,却是需要不断调整的。

在这些拼贴的作品中,人物的头部、衣服、鞋子都由单独拍摄的照片组合而成,霍克尼强调,每一个局部都存在一个”消失的点”,因此整个画面的深处实际上由多个消失的点构成。相较于一次成像的照片而言,观看也因此需要花费更多的时间。在霍克尼看来,这种缓慢观看所消耗的时间显然是值得的。

霍克尼连续为观众展示了多幅运用同样技巧创作的油画作品及照片拼贴。这些摆脱了传统焦点透视的图像,同样也意味着画家在创作时,要处于不断移动的而非固定不变的状态。


创作:“摄影从绘画而来,终又回归绘画”(“ Photography came out of painting,now going back to it.”)

大卫·霍克尼在《隐秘的知识》一书中揭示了摄影与绘画之间的秘密联系,同时,照片对于霍克尼的艺术创作具有至关重要的意义,因此摄影术自然成为本次讲座的核心话题。

霍克尼强调,相机的出现是早于照片的,他的意思是透镜的出现早于可以通过化学手段冲洗照片的摄影技术。而摄影从绘画而来,则是指相机的出现源于早期人们发现了可以利用透镜将景物投影到平面之上,而化学材料的出现,促使了可冲洗成像的现代照相机的发明。

现场放映了霍克尼拍摄于佛伦伦萨教堂的短片,演示了大师们如何通过凸透镜将景物倒影投射于平面,并在平面上将其描画下来。他认为这是传统的焦点透视画作背后那只“无形的手”,这只手在能够成像的化学材料出现之后变得不再需要,因为摄影术可以一下子抓住准确的透视关系。

然而,1990年PhotoShop 的出现再次改变了摄影与绘画的关系。化学材料不再使用,似乎也意味着传统焦点透视的绘画到了终结的时刻。由于摄影在“一次成像”之外出现了更多的可能性,霍克尼认为这是对绘画的回归,“人的手”再次参与其中。

在霍克尼的一幅作品中,每一把椅子都经过分开拍摄再使用Photoshop 组合进入画面。因此,每一把椅子都存在一个独立的“消失点”。这些独立的点牵引着观众的眼球,观众需要一个一个地“观照”,而不是一下子“抓住”。


观看:“一个,一个”(“You have to look them one by one”)

霍克尼再次引导我们进入“观看”的场域。他展示了一组肖像画,它们实际上一共有60幅,每幅肖像中的人物都坐在同样的一把红色椅子上,但是每一把椅子的角度又都不一样,所以这些椅子也就具有了和人一样的独特性和被单独观看的权利。我们必须一个一个地去看它们。

“一个,一个”,是他反复强调的观看方式。也就是中国散点透视绘画讲究的移步换景。这样观看的结果是,最后的空间感觉是发散性的,而不是聚在一起的。

他同时展示了一幅工作室内场景,他惯常的工作方式就是通过不停地在室内走来走去,而后把从不同角度观察到的场景画下来,在绘画的过程中,也会不停变换角度,通过俯视、远望以及不停地“穿行其中”来构建画面。

对于这样一种耗费体力的工作方式所搭建的画面,观看的正确或曰有效方式是唯一的,即我们在遭遇大卫·霍克尼并遇到观看阻力之后自觉转换的那种移步换景的方式。最终的空间感的成形正是建立在“一个一个”的观看动作背后,逐步完成一个整体的视觉空间的搭建工作。霍克尼坚持,经过逐一确立对象并最终搭建而成的不符合传统透视的“视觉空间”,具备远远超出“平面的”焦点透视图像所提供的真实感。这种真实感,是完全符合人们在日常生活场景中的观看经验的。


真相:
更接近日常观看的图像空间

大卫·霍克尼在工作中发现了“透视”的病症所在,这种发现在他对中国、日本、印度、波斯等国家“没有影子”的绘画的研究中得到了同步印证。也或许对这些国家的绘画观照促发了他对透视问题的思考。霍克尼并没有说明它们的先后,但这种互相佐证的强大力量的确说明了他想要揭示的在视觉作用下的(日常生活的以及图像的)“空间”的存在真相。

他认为,(在观看体验下)焦点透视的图像与日常生活场景之间是存在缺失的。而他的工作就在于要把这一部分体验的缺失通过对画面的构建而补充进去。最终的视觉效果,就像是不需要3D眼镜辅助的3D图像。这是一次成像的摄影术不可能实现的。

为了证明他的观点,大卫·霍克尼在现场播放了一个非常有趣又令人惊叹的短片。这个短片由十八台静止的摄像机同时拍摄而成,拍摄对象是十二位移动与杂耍中的马戏团演员。十八台机器与十二位演员在移动中发生接触,其间的作用实际上类似一种排列组合式的一一对应,对应背后的分组数字是庞大的,而这样的“庞大”与复杂,恰恰实现了对每一位演员的独立而充分的关照。

一台相机拍摄的场景往往将人物放置于画面中心,这样导致的结果是,场景代替了人物发生移动。多台机器同时拍摄的效果,在第二个演员出场时就已经猛然跳出,随着每一位演员的不断移动以及越来越多的演员缓缓进入镜头,这种从未有过的视频观看体验带来的舒适、愉悦和兴奋开始爆发。就像一幅不断在打开的卷轴,速度是缓慢的,观看是时长而诚恳的,每一个微小元素的移动都构成共同讲述画面中时间与空间关系的有效话语。“你甚至应该给每一位演员的鞋带以单独的关照。”

如果说散点透视的静止图像已经是对空间的更接近视觉真相的再现,而加入了“移动”在内的动态画面则又在真相中补充了时间。在多重镜头下,时间获得了一种类似“昨天”之于“今天”的意义的比照效用。霍克尼指出,这种拍摄方式实际上为电影开放了一个新的可能性。这种方式带来的观看体验,将更有说服力。

尽管到目前为止,大师使用透镜绘画的手法还只是一个假说,但这一假说背后所产生的对光学透视主宰欧洲绘画史的反思,对其所营造空间在视觉真实性上的反驳,无疑是振聋发聩的。而对散点透视与移步换景式的画面尝试,也分明是有效的。

另一个真相则是,我们在霍克尼的图像中所体验到的错觉与不适感,并非那个“不寻常”空间所造成,而是长久以来受到焦点透视图像训练的观看习惯所带来。


邵大箴先生与霍克尼先生对话——

中央美术学院美术史系教授邵大箴先生与大卫·霍克尼进行了继1981年之后的二次交谈。邵先生问及30年之后再度来访中国对“中国艺术”的印象改变,霍克尼坦言,1981年在中国并没有见到中国古代绘画艺术,但1983年在纽约第一次见到中国卷轴绘画时,的确受到很大震撼并对他的研究和创作产生了非常大的影响。邵先生随后又请霍克尼谈谈对“艺术家年龄与风格”即“时代与风格”的看法,霍克尼认为,我们都生活在当下,艺术创作不应该束缚于年代对艺术家的区分。最后,邵先生阐述了自己对于霍克尼创作中的“包容性”的理解,认为他在各种新旧媒介之间的自如转换,恰恰是其怀有巨大包容的一种体现。霍克尼对此表示认同,他表示任何一种有利于创作和表达的语言和媒介都会被他采用。


邵大箴先生与霍克尼先生交谈结束之后,讲座进入了观众提问环节。



观众提问——


问题1:当所有人都偏向选择指向观念的当代艺术的时候,您因何继续坚持绘画创作?
霍克尼:我跟随我的本能来创作。由于摄影术的出现,大家都说绘画已经死亡,但我并不认同,我认为摄影对于绘画来说,只是改变了其中的一小部分,并不是使其消亡。我们会在一个空间内找到它持续不断的生命力,它一直会延续下去。

问题2:您对最早采用摄影拼贴技术的奥斯卡•古斯塔夫•雷兰德等人怎么看?
霍克尼:在摄影史的梳理当中,他们自然是非常重要的。他们在1860年代创作这些作品时,采用的方式和绘画是非常相似的。有意思的是,起初人们并不把它们视为严格意义上的摄影作品,因为它们是拼贴而成的。

问题3:您如何保持创作的激情和对创作的新鲜感?画画时大脑通常在想什么?
霍克尼:我只要投入到创作之中,就只有三十岁。这是毕加索的说法,但我也有同样感觉。

问题4:您如何摆脱情绪低落?
霍克尼:我的确有情绪低落之时,且是在不画画的时候。因为除了画画,我不知道自己还能做些什么。

问题5:移步换景应该是一种观看的方式还是创作的方式?您借助于此创作的画面,给我们以错觉和荒诞感,这正您想要达成的效果吗?
霍克尼:你在观看时感到奇怪,但这些作品所要引发的思考就在于此。这种感觉其实更接近于你平时的观看方式。在适应之后你会发现,平面的摄影与毕加索、马蒂斯带给我们的丰富性相比,简直无聊透了。

问题6:您如何看待绘画与科技、绘画与时代的关系?
霍克尼:我们时刻在和技术、科技发生关系。我们最早使用的铅笔、油画笔等工具也都是科技的产物。我坚持认为,对任何有助于创作的媒介都应该持一种开放和接纳的态度。

问题7:您习惯于在图片中的作品前面放置椅子的用意是什么?
霍克尼:因为我们所熟悉的椅子的体量有助于在图片中直观地判断出作品的大小。椅子作为参照物而出现。

问题8:您能否谈谈中国绘画对您艺术思想与实践的影响?
霍克尼:研究摄影术发现的透视问题,结合中国绘画的散点透视对我的启发,最终形成了我的作品的现有面貌。


结语:
我们并没能在这次机会难得的讲座中看到一位艺术大师回顾他的“艺术生涯”,无论观众对于其之前的波普、拼贴以及泳池、iPhone、iPad系列的作品了解到何种程度,都既不绝对有助于也并不阻碍对这一场讲座的接受。这就是大卫·霍克尼的特殊之处,他乐于把最新鲜的自己展示给观众。试图将其艺术归纳于波普、立体主义、拼贴等标签的努力最终或许也将是徒劳,因为他是一位始终以三十岁的状态投入创作的人。而三十岁意味着,只有“变”是唯一不变。这场讲座以“我的观看”为题,实际上正是引领观众进入到一个“我们的观看”的场合之中,通过对不同于焦点透视的空间建构的实际观看,来帮助建立观众自己对于“空间真实性”的视觉经验与判断。

CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
