纸媒书籍的转型:第二届“钻石之叶——全球艺术家手制书展”开展

2015年10月17日,“钻石之叶”第二届全球艺术家手制书展在北京中央美术学院美术馆正式开展。10月18日下午,策展人、艺术家徐冰带领瑞典书籍装帧设计师团队,在展厅为首都十余家媒体进行了一场媒体导览。2012年,中央美术学院美术馆举办首届“钻石之叶”展,这是国内首次大规模的国际艺术家手制书展览。此次,徐冰教授再次发起并联合雅昌文化集团,与伦敦艺术大学切尔西学院教授克里斯·韦恩怀特(Chris Wainwright)共同策展“钻石之叶——第二届全球艺术家手制书展”。展览将持续至11月25日。


本次展览分为主体展及三个副展览。主体展包含近百件全球手制书作品,除来自于国际的超现实主义之父达利、观念艺术家布鲁斯·瑙曼、瑞士著名手制书艺术家罗斯·迪埃特等人的作品以及在书籍史上关键性的代表作品外,本届主体展作品40%为中国艺术家三年来的作品,极大程度推动了艺术家手制书创作在中国地区的发展。

三个副展览主题鲜明,在书籍的呈现方式上也为观众带来强烈的视觉效果。其中,“诺贝尔文学奖著作手工书设计”书展呈现出瑞典书籍艺术家精美至极的作品,反映出对人类文明成果的敬畏;通过“会动的书”的小型“立体书”展包含的作品,观众得以大致了解立体书文化简史,并感受在打开与翻动之间所创造的智慧;“艺术家的旅程”书展,是由本次展览的共同策展人克里斯·韦恩怀特特别策划的一个专题展,介绍了一部分艺术家对旅行态度的书,这部分书并非属于完全意义的“艺术家手制书”,而是从另一渠道反映了艺术家与书的关联。

何为“艺术家手制书”
“艺术家手制书”(Artist Books)是20世纪晚期出现的术语。它将“翻阅”艺术化,将文字阅读、视觉欣赏和材料触感自由转换为一个整体,让书籍制作成为处于“中间地带”的艺术。关于这种艺术形式的起源,大多数研究者认为英国著名艺术家和诗人威廉·布莱克(William Blake,1757-1827)是最早的发明者。

布莱克和他的妻子凯瑟琳自己动手书写书籍文字、绘制插图、印刷、着色并装订。这种手写和手绘形式为日后的艺术家手制书设定了基调,将文字、图像以及形式的整合与自己印刷、自己发行链接起来。以上因素作为艺术家手制书的关键概念保持至今。

展览缘起:国内对“艺术家手制书”价值的认识尚浅
展览发起人、艺术家、中央美院教授徐冰指出,在中国做一个比较全面介绍国际艺术家手制书的展览是他上世纪90年代在美国做访问艺术家的时候就产生的想法。欧美各大博物馆、图书馆都陆续设立艺术家手制书的研究和收藏部门,艺术院校也设有艺术家手制书工作室,有专门的基金会和专门经销这类艺术品的画廊。而国内对“艺术家手制书”价值的认识尚有待深入。

“艺术家手制书”这一艺术媒介在全球范围有悠久的历史和深厚的文化语境,同时作为一种当代艺术的创作形式具有巨大潜力,特别是在具有制书文化和历史的中国应有更多创造的可能性。秉承这一理念,首届“钻石之叶”展于2012年9月在中央美术学院美术馆成功举办。展览举办引发社会各界强烈反响,尤其启发了当代设计领域的发展。

此次展览除了延续第一届以邀请展的方式呈现全球精品的主体展,特面向亚洲区进行作品征集,经专家委员会评选,选择50件进入钻石之叶系列展。据悉,“钻石之叶”的品牌将以三年展的形式在未来延续下去。

转型时代:纸媒书籍“艺术化”
伴随着网络时代的到来,数码阅读逐渐取代纸本阅读。书籍,作为文化的载体,如何经过艺术家、设计师的巧思、巧手和创作,发挥更大的价值?对中国艺术家而言,如何利用民族文化身份,进一步发掘中国在造纸、活字印刷等方面的深厚传统与资源?这些都是展览策展人、艺术家希望借助展览与大众共同讨论的议题。

尽管数码阅读正快速取代纸媒阅读,手制书艺术却承担起维护书籍除阅读功能之外的文化尊严的作用,与电子书同样获得了相应的发展机遇。今天是一个“读物”转型的时代:纸媒书籍有可能被最终转化为“艺术”或“文化代表物”。

在本届的展览中,观众仍能看到首届展览的意义和作用。随着手机等移动终端的发展,也随着越来越年轻的人们进入阅读年龄,人类的阅读方式正按照三年前展览所预示的抛物线方向在延伸。这种延伸继续改变着千百年来的书籍史,并具体地左右着书籍的编辑倾向和营销策略,包括纸媒出版物的走向。

文化基因:中国艺术家手制书的惊人进展
通过作品征集,此次展览的主体展中约有40%来自中国艺术家的手制书作品。正如徐冰在展览前言写到:从对“艺术家手制书”这一概念的了解到近几年来在创作实践上的惊人进步,是我们思考中国手制书艺术家的智慧与能量的来源及潜力所在;中国艺术手制书风格、品味特征与我们文化基因的关联性。

中国独特的纸文化、装裱文化、书籍装订传统、中国古代特殊的观画方式,以及中国丰富的印刷与复制文化等,这些特殊的文化基因,被映射在中国艺术家手制书创作的每一处细节中。这些属于手艺范畴的内容,被放在人类知识与信息畅通分享的时代,有效使用和调动。这些作品与上世纪西方大师作品以及世界各地艺术家新作共同展示,有助于比照出中国艺术家的特点、优势、不足以及未来发展可为的空间。

学术讲座:西方书籍装帧的技术与审美
展览媒体导览后,徐冰教授主持的讲座《西方书籍装帧的技术与审美》在美术馆学术报告厅举行。主讲人瑞典书籍装帧设计协会主席乔安娜·罗佳尔德(Johanna Röjgård)从个人的工作经验出发,梳理了西方古老的书籍装帧历史、技术、材质、方法,以及审美趣味。


乔安娜着重提到在对过去的古籍进行修复时,“不要毁掉过去的证据”这一重要的理念:既不要遮蔽掩盖一本书籍过去的装帧细节与岁月痕迹,也不要为一本书的未来增添任何人为改变。同时她还提到,通过了解西方书籍装帧术的历史与传统,将古老的技法、材质带入现代,能为当代的书籍装帧创作带来灵感,从而寻找到新的设计可能性。她倡议大家一起大胆发挥想象,进行书籍装帧创作。

乔安娜演讲结束后,主持人徐冰教授与两位瑞典书籍装帧设计师丽莎·罗玛尔斯·博特尔曼(Lisa Romaeus Bertelman)、普尔·安德斯·胡博纳(Per Anders Hübner)一起上台,就书籍装帧创作、“诺贝尔文学奖著作手工书设计”副展览、对手制书的想法等与现场观众进行了一场交流。

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
