The theme of 2019 CAFA Graduation Season is “Archaeologies of the Future”. Looking back through CAFA’s history, it dates back to the founding of National School of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1918, the merging with Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Yan’an in 1938, the beginning of a new era after 1949. Having now become China’s first-class university, CAFA lives up to its founding fathers’ expectations. Seventy years since the People’s Republic of China was founded, we have realized the great renewal of the Chinese nation that countless Chinese people have yearned for. CAFA always thinks of the nation’s destiny and people’s will, devoting itself to the cause of Chinese fine arts. Looking into the future, every current happening will become history in the future. This year, being the first year of CAFA’s second hundred-year journey, and the 70th anniversary of new China, is a key time node that links the past and the future. The new graduates are both successors of CAFA’s academic bloodline and pioneers of future China.

The 2019 CAFA Graduate Students’ Graduate Artwork Exhibition will display over 1,000 artworks by 316 graduate students, including 22 Doctor degree graduates and 294 Master degree graduates. The exhibition will take place in the CAFA Art Museum, on-campus exhibition halls, exhibition halls of Building 7, and the Plaster Gallery, etc. The show represents the highest level of creations by new graduates of the visual arts disciplines in China, and the epitome of fine arts academies’ graduates in recent years. The exhibition will last till May 31. On June 6, CAFA Undergraduate Students’ Graduate Artwork Exhibition will open.

Preface

Last year, CAFA welcomed its 100th anniversary. This year, it embarks on its second 100-year journey. A century is an insurmountable time frame, and we could only get a glimpse of pieces of history in the time and space dimension. The lacebark pine planted by fine arts pioneers still stood firmly on the campus, while the plaster teaching aid brought by the early students are still functioning in today’s class…these old objects that stayed through a century in CAFA is the same as the archaeological discoveries shown in the museums. They are the eyewitnesses of CAFA’s journey from Xiaowei Hutong to Wanhong Xi Street, and later to Huajiadi Nan Street.

In 2019, we look back through CAFA’s century-old history. The merging of the National School of Fine Arts in Beijing, founded in 1918, and the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Yan’an, founded in 1938, shaped the solid foundation of CAFA. After 1949, CAFA entered into a new stage, growing together with new China. Having gone through the change of times and society, CAFA today is exactly what its founding fathers have expected it to be, and is also listed as a “Double First-Class” university by the Ministry of Education. Seventy years since the People’s Republic of China was founded, we have realized the great renewal of the Chinese nation, a blueprint that countless Chinese people have yearned for but never were able to fulfill. CAFA always thinks of the nation’s destiny and people’s will, devoting itself to the cause of Chinese fine arts. Like President Xi wrote in return to an old professor: “To educate numerous students with the great spirit of selfless dedication; to create timeless masterpieces with the great beauty of art.”

In 2019, we look into the future. Everything that happens at present will become “history” in the “future”. What are we going to present future generations with as a part of history? This sense of mission, coming from distant future, propels us to cherish this moment, to show today’s thinking and social status with art making. The fruits of today’s artistic exploration are strongly marked with the stamp of times. The 2019 Graduation Season’s theme is “Archaeologies of the Future”. This year is also an important time node. As graduates at the beginning of CAFA’s new hundred-year journey, you are successors of CAFA’s academic bloodline; as graduates at the 70th anniversary of new China, you are pioneers of the nation’s future.

Another summer is going to arrive. Nearly 400 excellent students will accomplish their study, and are prepared to face the test of society. Around 1,000 works of art are set up in the galleries, waiting for the public’s examination. The 3-year life as a graduate student is an important transitional period towards your future career. Perhaps you have realized what you expected of yourselves three years ago, and hopefully you are already looking forward to what you will become in the future. The human race is rapidly updating their discoveries, from the theory of relativity a century ago, to the fact that we have already laid our eyes on a black hole deep in the universe, thanks to the help of radio telescopes. The human race is steadily realizing their dreams, and perhaps in the near future, they would be able to travel through time and space freely - hopefully when you traveled back to 2019 from the future, you’ll appreciate yourself for trying hard for your dream, for devoting yourself to art making day and night, for embracing your dream no matter how unrealistic it might seem; and appreciate CAFA for its education. The future is coming. The future has already come! We wish you all a bright future!
