Details

Mr. Wei Qimei was an important oil painter, cartoonist and art educator in the art history of modern China. In 1942, he was admitted to the Department of Art, Chongqing Central University, where he was supervised by teachers such as Xu Beihong and Lv Sibai. After his graduation in 1947, he was invited by Mr. Xu Beihong to teach sketching and oil painting at the National Art School in Beiping. After the founding of New China, he continued to work at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), successively teaching in the Department of Painting and the Department of Oil Painting. He had been the leader of the Teaching and Research Group of the Department of Oil Painting, the Director of the Graduate Course of the Oil Painting Department, and a member of the Academic Committee of the academy. The year 2023 coincided with the centenary of Mr. Wei Qimei’s birth, and CAFA organized the exhibition, “Depicting the Times – A Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Wei Qimei’s Birth”, to present his artistic life and achievements, and pay tribute to this old gentleman.

This exhibition shows Mr. Wei Qimei’s painting experience and different forms of painting creation in seven academic topics: “Prophet and Hindsight”, “Observation of Reality”, “Modern Diversion”, “Poetry of Life”, “Exploration of Ink”, “Philosophy of Drawing” and “Cartoon Encyclopedia”, comprehensively combing through his artistic achievements in the past century. This is the first exhibition focusing on Mr. Wei Qimei’s oil paintings and offers a collective presentation of his works as an important oil painter in the history of Chinese art in the 20th century. Starting from the research of art history, the exhibition collects his ideas and theoretical methods of creation and sorts out his oil painting creations according to more than a hundred notes, manuscripts and published articles. For the first time, the exhibition includes Mr. Wei Qimei’s ink works in the discussion of his painting language, which not only demonstrates his continuous study of ink paintings over the past decades, but also gives a glimpse of him learning and shifting between the two media of oil painting and ink painting.

This exhibition has received strong support from Mr. Wei Qimei’s family. On behalf of the family, Mr. Wei Qimei’s son, Wei Husheng, donated two oil paintings, a painting box and painting tools (a set) that were used by Mr. Wei Qimei to CAFA as the permanent exhibition collection.

Preface

Jin Shangyi, Honorary Chairman of the China Artists Association, and former Director of the Central Academy of Fine Arts:
Mr. Wei was my teacher, and later, we taught together in the First Studio of the Oil Painting Department. At the beginning of the founding of New China, just when I was a student, he was one of the most active teachers at CAFA. At that time, teachers were drawing in the classroom of the academy, and as students, we often went to the studio to see the creations of these older gentlemen. Model Culturist was one of the earliest large-scale works I saw at that time, in which multiple figures were created in the picture. His thinking was very sharp, and after the reform and opening up, he accepted many artistic techniques of modern art and produced many works that expressed the new atmosphere of Beijing, such as New Line, Telephone Booth, Corridor Attached to the Middle School and so on. Until his later years, his thoughts kept changing and his artistic exploration was constantly evolving.

Gao Hong, Party Secretary of the Central Academy of Fine Arts:
“Depicting the Times” firstly reflects that Mr. Wei Qimei was an excellent artist with a strong sense of social responsibility and historical mission. He made great achievements in the fields of teaching practice, theoretical writing, oil painting and cartoon creation. He adhered to the spirit of realism and remained highly sensitive to new things. In his creation, he emphasized the synchronization of art and the times, and his works reveal a distinct atmosphere of the era. “Depicting the Times” also reflects that Mr. Wei Qimei was an outstanding art educator who was committed to laying down solid skills for his students. Mr. Wei Qimei had been teaching at CAFA all his life and made remarkable contributions to the education of basic courses. Not only did he work diligently on the front line of teaching, but he also designed the overall structure and syllabus for the basic courses of CAFA. The basic teaching system that he participated in the design has been an important part of the teaching system of CAFA. Mr. Wei Qimei spent nearly half a century in the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and in his creative and educational career, he conscientiously fulfilled his duties as a teacher while laying the foundation for his artistic career step by step

Lin Mao, Director of the Central Academy of Fine Arts:
Mr. Wei Qimei had always maintained a keen observation of life, a deep commitment to teaching and a relentless pursuit of art. With a firm artistic belief, he continuously exploited the painting language and different ways of artistic expression, carefully studied the methods of teaching basic courses, and responded to the issues of the times with a broad vision and various artistic creations.
This exhibition is centered on his practice of oil painting and his exploration in the fields of ink painting, sketching and cartoons. Combined with a wealth of literature and historical materials, the exhibition presents the transition and development of Mr. Wei Qimei’s different artistic creations at various life stages, showing his unique and brilliant art – famous for oil painting, cartoon, sketching and cultivated by ink painting. Mr. Wei Qimei’s style of oil painting was established early, transforming from realism to modernity, and he created a large number of works that unfold the openness and vitality of an artist. This exhibition also displays his exploration and practice of ink painting for the first time, providing a new perspective for us to understand Mr. Wei Qimei. His cartoons describe the hustle and bustle of life, are very popular with the masses, and play an important role in the history of Chinese comics. Mr. Wei Qimei’s sketches have left an indelible imprint on Chinese art education. He did a lot of teaching research and system construction for the Painting Department, and the First Studio of the Oil Painting Department. These precious results have constituted an important part of the teaching system of CAFA. It is believed that Mr. Wei Qimei’s artistic creation and educational practice will become the spiritual guidance and inspiration for the new century of CAFA!

Yu Ding, Exhibition Curator, Director of the School of Art Management and Education of CAFA, Sino-French School of Art and Design Management of CAFA:
“As an artist, we should first understand the world, what the world is like before we can present it in our creation.” This is the most important lesson Mr. Wei Qimei taught me. Ten years ago, I curated the “Wei Qimei and Basic Teaching” exhibition and sorted out all the historical materials about Mr. Wei’s sketch teaching. Seven years ago, I organized “Social Encyclopedia –An Exhibition of Wei Qimei’s Cartoons” and reviewed more than 800 cartoons he created. Today, I would like to commemorate Mr. Wei’s centenary year with the title “Depicting the Times”. Mr. Wei Qimei, as a painter, called himself “the man who holds a brush”, which is implicit and simple, but clearly and firmly indicates his belief in art. Mr. Wei Qimei had been humble and modest all his life, always in awe of art and had never stopped the pursuit of it. He looked into the future with knowledge, stuck to his belief with pride, and never stopped in his pursuit of truth. We would like to take this exhibition to pay tribute to the predecessors of CAFA, and hope that today we can inherit the spirit handed down by the older gentlemen, preserve the century-old tradition of the academy, forge ahead in an innovative and enterprising spirit, and become the person who depicts the new era.

Wei Hushing, the representative of Mr. Wei Qimei’s family:
My father, Mr. Wei Qimei, graduated from the National Central University in 1947 and was invited by Mr. Xu Beihong to come to the National Art School in Beiping, later he taught at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, fulfilling his lifelong dream of art. In his teaching, he constantly explored new teaching methods and approaches to improve the quality of education. He also continuously enhanced his own artistic cultivation and dedicated his life to the cause of art that he loved. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the staff who have contributed to this exhibition, and all those who have helped and loved Mr. Wei Qimei.
