“语言的裂变:现实主义图像的当代转向”对谈回顾

2016年5月3日在中央美院美术馆举行了一场题为“语言的裂变:现实主义图像的当代转向”的对话。该对话由《艺术界》副主编贺婧主持,邀请艺术家仇晓飞和电影导演胡伟作为对谈嘉宾,展开关于“后社会主义现实主义”更延展和深入的讨论。

贺婧(以下简称“贺”)X  仇晓飞(以下简称“仇”):
在你的作品中,从美院附中到中央美院的教育体系肯定是不能忽略的一个历程,而在与你有着相似教育经历的很多艺术家身上也能看到这一体系留下的现实主义或社会主义现实主义美学的痕迹。但是很多人在离开学校开始独立创作的时候,都遇到了很大的问题,发现他们所学习到的技术和语言很难跟当代的图像环境或系统发生关系。你个人在当时也遇到了类似的问题吗?  
仇:其实我刚毕业的那些跟记忆有关的画,和“绘画”的关系远一点,跟“图像”的关系近一点,基本是对在一个既有社会里我所经历的图像的临摹复制,实际上是一种心理体验,因为绘画是一种关于图像的创造,而早期那些画里面没有创造性。
你刚才说的问题非常复杂,因为从绘画最基本的东西来讲,比如平行透视的构图方式更容易让画家获得自由,我可以像文艺复兴早期那样把大的人物放大、小的人物缩小,不受到透视线的作用。但是我们学习的经验,它是把一种透视的方式植入一个小孩最开始散点的、不懂得透视的视角里,这种透视的方式会慢慢进入到他绘画的记忆里去。
作为一个画家,肯定希望绘画的方式越来越自由、主观,使用绘画的方式会带有很深的经验记忆,甚至带有意识形态的记忆。所以我觉得肯定没有一个纯粹自由的存在,因为这个自由都是带有区域性的。但是对于画家来讲你的朝向方向一定和你的经验之间存在一个拉伸力,这有点类似于弓背和弓弦,最有力的状态是拉到很满,但是不会断。

贺  X  胡伟(以下简称“胡”):

与仇晓飞相比,你所接受的艺术教育体系完全不同(从北师大导演系、到巴黎国立高等美院、再到Fresnoy)。但从早期的反映几部在法华人移民生活的影片到《酥油灯》,还是能看到比较强的现实主义美学印记。
胡:我的教育背景比较复杂,比如大家刚才看到的《酥油灯》它有一个比较明显的现实主义修辞方法,但还是很难定义为现实主义风格。比较根本的问题就是所谓现实主义首先是一个长期存在的哲学传统,是一个世界观,从这个角度来讲,其实我的作品趋于一个现实主义的临界线,我更倾向于把它定义为一种积极的浪漫主义。
今天我们在这里谈现实主义有点超现实的意味。从我自身的教育背景来讲的话,西方尤其法国的现实主义是一脉相承的,它与浪漫主义的对抗是并行的,但是对于我们来讲这一层是缺失的。拿影像角度来讲,从意大利新鲜主义到德国表现主义到新浪潮,这是我们接受的一个传统的电影史美学教育线索,这个社会主义背景和我们所处的语境是不同的,所以比较有的意思的是如果30年代左翼联盟的时候谈现实主义电影是有的放矢的,但是我在2006年毕业,到了这个时期我想现实主义对我而言不是真正意义上的现实主义,而是写实主义的修辞方法。
我个人的话,从北师大毕业后去了巴黎国立电影学院(FEMIS),再到巴黎国立美术学院,所接受的电影学院教育实际上存在分裂。FEMIS带有很典型的欧陆人文主义哲学色彩,还是基于现象学、阐释学、存在主义这条线,主要尤其是60年代法国哲学;但是在巴黎美院,我所在的Tony  Brown的工作室因倾向于观念艺术——巴黎美院这样的传统学院从60年代开始做了很大的反思,甚至在80年代开始很多英美老师进入美院,就出现了很分裂的情况。因为整个当代艺术的语境还是一个以英美哲学为主导的一个语境,而这个东西在电影学院体系是非常非常排斥的。这就造成了两种教育背景打架,尤其我自己身上。刚才晓飞谈到他在美院系统接受到的意识形态包括技法的影响,这个已经转化到血液和基因里了,它和新植入的观念之间很难找到平衡。电影学院会比较看重叙事和电影语言,而在美院艺术家电影的范畴中是要让影像本身有一个突破,是反叙事和反传统的,这两者之间当然存在矛盾的。

贺  X  仇:
你在最近的一个采访中提到,这次去纽约做展览的契机让你重新感受到一个艺术家来源的重要性。比如在你的图像系统中,与“社会主义现实主义”相关的渊源,它可能是隐性的,但始终存在。
仇:没有说起来那么简单。因为美院这个系统实际上很复杂,徐悲鸿从法国带回来的现实主义的传统,其实他的根基不是一个先锋派的东西,而是带有沙龙艺术倾向的现实主义。但是后来逐渐的韦启美作为徐悲鸿的学生,他把形式的东西包括受美国的影响提出来,这是一条线。另外一条线是在我上学的时候,美院整体的主导是以建国以后苏联现实主义基础为传统,其实和法国来的那种东西又完全不一样,是另外的一个系统。所以说当时这几种东西有强有弱在美院里,但也是一个复杂的混杂状态,因为我们上学的时候已经开始接触到当代艺术、观念艺术,新的东西已经都进来了,那么当你看待现实主义传统的时候就不是一种亲切的状态,它有点排斥性,反叛性。但是这个方向到底到哪去?又是一个含糊的问题。

贺  X  胡:

《酥油灯》的手法是一个很多元的组合,它还是带有纪录片性质,同时又有很强的“装置”感,整个影片结构的构想上也带有明显的观念影像成份。
胡:我对《酥油灯》的定义还是一个美术馆电影,是一个对空间有要求的影像作品。从技术角度、电影语言来讲它有传统电影的基础,但从某种程度的叙事性状态,可以定义为类似于美术馆电影的东西。最早我是对福柯关于“异托邦”的东西很感兴趣,我纳闷福柯在整个过程中没有提及影像,他提了很多包括图书馆、墓地,甚至包括舞台、戏剧,但没有提影像。同时期的时候看过纪录片《华沙1946》,又讨论了很多东西,就在想是不是做一种类似实验的尝试。大家想象一下刚才在这个片子里幕布本身是一个二维空间的东西,我把几个不同的空间组织在一起,一个三维的世界投向在二维的世界之上,这个东西本身是符合“异托邦”的概念的,我在影像背后呈现的并不是单纯的三维世界,而是在三维世界中定制了一个图像的二维的东西在它的后面,就产生了一个比较奇怪和混乱的状况。

贺  X  胡:

你曾经说过“照片”对你而言更像是一种非现实的东西,在很大程度上“照片”遮盖住了“现实”,同时你也提到过自己的影像作品比较多利用“再现”与“表现”交叉结合的修辞方法。是否可以理解为你将自己的创作界定于一种同时结合了“纪录”和“虚构”的影像形式?

胡:我不太同意纪录片的这个概念,这个有点太泛泛了。我的影片是介于虚构和纪录两者之间的,一个比较关键的问题还是一个对于现实主义的主观性的理解。这是最早我所面临过的一个问题,非虚构和纪实最重要的是客观和主观,但怎么来定义客观性和主观性?保持客观性是不是就是不介入?你拿起摄像机的一瞬间其实就带有很强的主观性在里面,我们不可能存在全能全知的视角。当我们谈论现实主义的时候,会谈论细节的真实性、人物的典型性,描写的客观性,但对我来说不存在客观性,没有办法做到,所以没有办法归类为所谓现实主义电影。

仇:就像胡伟刚才说的,艺术创作这个东西肯定是主观性的。从绘画来讲这两年说的比较多的、有问题的说法是从抽象或具像的角度去谈论绘画,但这里面有很大的问题。绘画从一开始肯定抽象的,因为没有一块颜色是具像的。对面来一个人走过来我画下来,你需要一个抽象总结的方式,绘画从最一开始的时候,它的形式就带有它的属性,你使用哪种形式都有这个属性,只不过如何调用它。
贺  X  仇:
在你这两年的创作推进中,我们看到之前带有社会主义现实主义痕迹的图式实际上发生了转化——从早期我们看到的是你记忆中的图像,到后来慢慢变成一种不是记忆的肌理和表层,而是牵连着一种意识和精神结构的图像。但走到这里似乎下一步的推进就更困难了?
仇:我的兴趣逐渐回到绘画本身,我希望还是在绘画本体里面去解决所有的这些问题。今天很多艺术家遇到问题,他只能是一方面使用现实去拼贴,一方面使用观念的介入,但是这个时候我越来越觉得这是一个问题。
无论是从观念的角度、图像学的角度阐述绘画,还是从一个手法、内容或者拼贴的角度来阐述绘画,问题始终都停留在一个平层上,不能到另一个层面。绘画永远不能自足,因为当你看到一张绘画的时候,它不能直观提供给你上述这些东西,比如从文学性的角度来去阐释,或者是说从一个其他的观念定制的角度去理解。所以我还是希望能以更直接和主动的方式去体现。比如拍电影和录像可以借助很多其他的东西来转化这种主动性,但当画家已经丧失了拿起笔就画一些东西的能力的话,他就丧失了真正的主动性,他只是一个图像学意义上的艺术家,但是这一点从最根本上来讲是缺乏先锋性的,它不会进入更深的层面,这是我意识到的。
我所说的不是一个绘画能力的问题,是一个思维的问题。刚才说绘画这个东西没有技巧,都是抽象的,从最开始就是形式的,我们往往误认为形式的东西不带有思维性,它是通用的。但其实形式绝对不是通用的。绘画就是一个世界观,它从你开始使用这种方式的时候就会有一点和其他东西不太一样,随着一个人的操作,你的思维和操作混杂在一起,思维产生了操作方式,操作的方式遇到了一个困境以后会反作用于你的思维。所以我是觉得如果不反思的话,绘画可能就是一个相对简单的选择,如果要是对这个事情进行反思的话可能就是另外一个结果,他像一个多出口的图景。
我们今天讨论现实性的时候有点受困于谈自己的经验、历史的经验、教育的现实等,这些东西当然是存在的。但在绘画里面应该有一个超越这些东西、超越这个现实性层面的讨论。我觉得关于绘画如何回到一种对主动性的调用的讨论,可能会突破我们今天所讨论的现实性。
在一系列的对答问题后中,观众们也积极参与到谈话中,整个活动在大家的热烈讨论中结束。这也引发我们的思考,本次活动仅仅是转换的一个表现或者过程,其深远意义将跟随艺术的发展而趋向丰富。

Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.
