CAFA Art Museum is Now One of the First Batch of Pilot Units for Cultural and Creative Products Development

CAFA Art Museum has been recognized by the Ministry of Culture to be one of the first batches of pilot units for the development of the cultural and creative product.  Since the issue of Notice of the State Council on Approving and Forwarding Some Opinions from the Ministry of Culture and Other Departments on Promoting the Development of Cultural and Creative Products at Cultural Relics Units (No. 36 [ 2016], State Council), on May 11th 2016, the Ministry of Culture and the State Administration of Cultural Relics have identified 154 institutions for creative products development. Worldly Renowned Artist Sean Scully Donated Weeping Song to CAFA Art Museum

In early 2015, Sean Scully had his first individual exhibition Follow the Heart: The Art of Sean Scully, 1964-2014, London -New York at CAFA Art Museum. The exhibition received great popularity. After one and a half years, the artist decided to donate one of his large works Weeping Song to CAFA Art Museum. On September 6th, 2016, as Sean was having his exhibition in Guangzhou, Wang Huangsheng, Director of CAFA Art Museum visited him and accepted his donation.At the donation ceremony, Director Wang Huangsheng expressed his gratitude and said CAFA Art Museum has been waiting for this work for over a year. Sean took the certificate while posing for a photo shoot. His sense of humor affected all the guests and audience. Sean Scully is one of the most important living abstract painters and international art masters. His works were exhibited in and collected by over 150 museums and institutions around the world, including the Met, MoMA, Centre Pompidou, and Tate London. Sean was also a visiting scholar at Harvard and Princeton. Sean was awarded the Turner Award twice in 1989 and 1993.Philosopher and art critic Arthur Danto praised Sean Scully as such “Scully's historical importance lies in the way he has brought the great achievement of Abstract Expressionist painting into the contemporary moment”. The Exhibition: Follow the Heart: The Art of Sean Scully, 1964-2014, London -New York Follow the Heart: The Art of Sean Scully, 1964-2014, London -New York was Sean's first individual exhibition in China. CAFAM Projects Have Been Selected for the 2016 National Art Collections and Donation Awards

The Annual National Art Collection and Donation Award, launched by the Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture in 2015, is an important award considering collection and donation program of art museums in China. This project mainly supports the collection and donation of key national art museums across the country. The donated works will be recorded in the national collection, and also serve to support the related research, exhibitions, discussions, public education, etc.. In 2015, the donation projects of the works of Feng Fasi and Sun Zixi at CAFA Art Museum were awarded the 2015 National Collection and Donation Award. In 2016, there were six projects at our museum that was selected for the 2016 National Art Collections and Donation Awards, including collection and donation projects of Luo Gongliu, Zhang Ping, Wu Biduan, Tian Shiguang, Tan Quanshu and Qin Xuanfu. All of them received funds from the Ministry of Culture. This year, the museum held a large retrospective exhibition for Mr. Luo Gongliu and Mr. Zhang Ping and received eight representative works from Mr. Zhang Ping's family. Other projects are also in the process with related exhibitions and research planned. In recent years, the CAFA Art Museum has paid great attention to the research and collection of the works of the old artists of CAFA and has also carried out exhibitions for renowned artists who are CAFA’s alumnus. On the one hand, the works of the artists are to prepare for the commemorative activities of the centennial anniversary of CAFA in 2018. More importantly, the collection and research can help to carry on the tradition of the academy, which is to sorting out the development of art and education in China in the Twentieth Century, as well as stimulating the younger generation. CAFA Art Museum Received Donation from Yang Li

The CAFA Art Museum has been promoting the collection of the works of important artists and art educators from the twentieth century. Through continuous efforts, we have collected many important artworks and achieved a good reputation. With the approaching of its centennial anniversary, CAFA has received an increasing amount of attention from the society. In May 2016, Mr. Yang Li, the former secretary of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and a professor at the Department of Printmaking, proposed to donate his work Sha Tan Hong Lou(沙滩红楼) and some other representative works made around the 1950s. Our museum has shown our gratitude for his generous donation and support and has appointed Wang Chunling and Li Sha for further arrangements. In the morning of June 2, 2016, Tang Bin, the Vice President of CAFAM,joined with Li Yaochen, the Deputy Director of CAFAM’s Collection Department, and Wang Chunling, Manager of CAFAM’s Collection Department, together they visited Mr. Yang Li's residence and issued a collection certificate to Mr. Yang Li.Sha Tan Hong Lou(沙滩红楼) is a thought-provoking landscape painting. On the one hand, this painting is made for commemorating the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Communist Party of China, as Sha Tan Hong Louis the former site of Peking University, the birthplace of the May 4th Movement, and also the place where Li Dazhao and Mao Zedong, the leaders of the Communist Party of China, had worked. The building painted in the artwork is not only a representation of history but a memorial to the founders of the Communist Party of China. On the other hand, this work is also to commemorate the artist’s father, who had taken numerous classes in the Sha Tan Hong Lou during his study in Peking University and had participated in the May 4th Movement and the December 9th Movement. Sha Tan Hong Lou is also of great significance to Mr. Yang's growth. In 1948, Mr. Yang Li went to study at Yan'an University and in 1958, he was graduated from the Printmaking Department at Central Academy of Fine Arts. The representative works donated by Mr. Yang Li reflect the spirit and the artistic features of the specific historical period. The works are of great significance for us to learn more about the teaching and creation of printmaking in the 1950s and have enriched the collection of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum.

The CAFA Art Museum has been selected by the Outstanding Art Museum Project Award of the Year 2016

Recently, the Ministry of Culture issued “The Notice of The General Office of The Ministry of Culture on The Publication of The Results of The Inspection And Acceptance of National Exhibition Season of Brilliant Collection Works from Art Museum in China in 2015” and “The Notice of the Office of The Ministry of Culture on The Publication of The Results of 2015 Annual Outstanding Art Museum Project”. The declared exhibitions and public education activities at CAFA art museum have won all three awards, and this is also the fourth year for the museum to win all the awards by the Ministry of Culture.  1. National Exhibition Season of Brilliant Collection Works from Art Museum in China—The Dimension of Tradition: Copying and Collection for the National Traditional PaintingThe Dimension of Tradition: Copying and Collection for the National Traditional  Painting by CAFA in the 1950s and 1960s is the fourth exhibition of CAFAM’s collection. The series also includes the Selected Works of Oil Painting Created in the Period of National Beiping Art School, Selected Works of Chinese Painting Created in the Period of National Beiping Art School and Realignment--From Beiping Fine Arts School, Yan’an Luxun College of Fine Arts to China Central Academy of Fine Arts(1946-1953)which were held in the last three years. CAFA Museum Received Donations of Artworks from Joseph Beuys and Kevin Clark

At the beginning of the Year, the museum has received two major international gifts—two artworks by Joseph Beuys and Kevin Clarke. Wang Huangsheng, Director of the Museum, had paid a visit to the art collector Michael Berg and the artist Kevin Clark on behalf of CAFA Art Museum and brought back these two artworks.Joseph  Beuys,  Promotion  Card  'Von  Hodler  zur  Antiform',  10.9  x  18  cm,1970Joseph Beuys was a sculptor, a painter, a sketch artist, a teacher, a theorist and a politic activist. He is one of the most radical, creative and influential artists, who explored a lot of new formats of art and had a profound influence on other artists.In 2013, CAFA Art Museum held an exhibition Bueys in China, introducing Bueys’ art to China. The exhibition, with its solid academic value, was considered one of the most influential exhibitions of the year. Having this opportunity of collecting Beuys’ original work, we believe, is a recognition and affirmation of our work from Kevin Clark. Beuys’ signaturePropaganda Card 'Von Hodler zur Antiform' is a postcard signed by the artist himself. The card was designed in 1970 for Jean Christophe Ammann and Harald Szeemann’s book Von Hodler zur Antiform, which introduces the oldest Swiss art museum, Kunstmuseum Bern. On the right side of the postcard is the artist’s signature. The piece itself is small, but only limited versions were produced, which makes it highly valuable. Kevin  Clark    Portrait  of  Nam  June  Paik, Archival  Color  Print,  100cm×80cm×2PCS,1999The other piece is Kevin Clark’s Portrait of Nam June Paik. Kevin Clark was born in New York in 1953 and graduated from Cooper Union in 1976. His works were exhibited in Exposition of Mythology – Electronic Technology (Nam June Paik Art Center, Gyonggi do, South Korea, 2009), Twisted Into Recognition: Clichés of Jews and Others (Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership, Chicago, USA, 2008), and Super-Organism/ Research and Experiment from a Specific View (CAFA Art Museum, China, 2012).Portrait of Nam June Paik was exhibited in the first CAFAM Biennial Super-Organism/ Research and Experiment from a Specific View. After the exhibition, the artist decided to donate this piece, expressing his appreciation of the works done by CAFAM.Portrait of Nam June Paikuses DNA sequence product produced by Berlin company Agowa AG’s (currently part of LGC Ltd.) In 1991, when the piece was created, the gene issue was still a mysterious topic. Aware of the topic, the artist asked Nam June Paik’s consent to use his DNA for art creation. With a spirit of exploration and a much discussion, both Paik and Clark cooperated and produced this piece of artwork. What interesting was that Nam June Paik, a great video artist, chose not to record the process of blood draw of himself.CAFA Art Museum works hard to expand its collection of art. In recent years, the museum is strengthening its international collection and contemporary Chinese art collection. Therefore, it is significant for us to have works by Beuys and Clark.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):

I. General Provisions

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

(1) Party A is the portraiture rights holder in this agreement. Party A voluntarily licenses its portraiture rights to Party B for the purposes stipulated in this agreement and permitted by law.

(2) Party B (CAFA Art Museum) is a specialized, international modern art museum. CAFA Art Museum keeps pace with the times, and works to create an open, free, and academic space and atmosphere for positive interaction with groups, corporations, institutions, artists, and visitors. With CAFA’s academic research as a foundation, the museum plans multi-disciplinary exhibitions, conferences, and public education events with participants from around the world, providing a platform for exchange, learning, and exhibition for CAFA’s students and instructors, artists from around the world, and the general public. As a public institution, the primary purposes of CAFA Art Museum’s public education events are academic and beneficial to society.

(3) Party B will photograph all CAFA Public Education Department events for Party A.

II. Content, Forms of Use, and Geographical Scope of Use

(1) Content. The content of images taken by Party B bearing Party A’s likeness include: ① CAFA Art Museum ② CAFA campus ③ All events planned or executed by the CAFAM Public Education Department.

(2) Forms of Use. For use in CAFA’s publications, products with CDs, and promotional materials.

(3) Geographical Scope of Use

The applicable geographic scope is global.

The media in which the portraiture may be used encompasses any media that does not infringe upon Party A’s portraiture rights (e.g., magazines and the internet).

III. Term of Portraiture Rights Use

Use in perpetuity.

IV. Licensing Fees

The fees for images bearing Party A’s likeness will be undertaken by Party B.

After completion, Party B does not need to pay any fees to Party A for images bearing Party A’s likeness.

Additional Terms

(1) All matters not discussed in this agreement shall be resolved through friendly negotiation between both parties. Both parties may then sign a supplementary agreement, provided it does not violate any laws or regulations.

(2) This agreement comes into effect on the date that it is signed (sealed) and the relevant boxes are selected by Party A and Party B.

(3) This agreement exists in paper and electronic forms. The paper form is made in duplicate, with Party A and Party B each retaining one copy with the same legal efficacy.

Event participants implicitly accept and undertake all the obligations stated in this agreement. Those who do not consent will be seen as abandoning the right to participate in this event. Before participating in this event, please speak to your family members to obtain their consent and inform them of this disclaimer. After participants sign/check the required box, participants and their families will be seen as having read and agreed to these terms.

CAFA Art Museum Publication Authorization Agreement

I fully agree to CAFA Art Museum (CAFAM) submitting to CAFA for publication the images, pictures, texts, writings, and event products (such as works created during participation in workshops) related to me from my participation in public events (including museum member events) organized by the CAFA Art Museum Public Education Department. CAFA can publish these materials by electronic, web, or other digital means, and I hereby agree to be included in the China Knowledge Resource Bank, the CAFA Database, the CAFA Art Museum Database, and related data, documentation, and filing institutions and platforms. Regarding their use in CAFA and dissemination on the internet, I agree to make use of these rights according to the stated Rules.

CAFA Art Museum Event Safety Disclaimer

Article I

This event was organized on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and voluntary participation and withdrawal. Participants undertake all risk and liability for themselves. All events have risks, and participants must be aware of the risks related to their chosen event.

Article II

Event participants must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, as well as moral and ethical norms. All participants must demonstrate good character, respect for others, friendship, and a willingness to help others.

Article III

Event participants should be adults (people 18 years or older with full civil legal capacity). Underage persons must be accompanied by an adult.

Article IV

Event participants undertake all liability for their personal safety during the event, and event participants are encouraged to purchase personal safety insurance. Should an accident occur during an event, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for the accident, but both have the obligation to provide assistance. Event participants should actively organize and implement rescue efforts, but do not undertake any legal or economic liability for the accident itself. The museum does not undertake civil or joint liability for the personal safety of event participants.

Article V

During the event, event participants should respect the order of the museum event and ensure the safety of the museum site, the artworks in displays, exhibitions, and collections, and the derived products. If an event causes any degree of loss or damage to the museum site, space, artworks, or derived products due to an individual, persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for losses. The event participant must negotiate and provide compensation according to the relevant legal statutes and museum rules. The museum may sue for legal and financial liability.

Article VI

Event participants will participate in the event under the guidance of museum staff and event leaders or instructors and must correctly use the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities provided for the event. If a participant causes injury or harm to him/herself or others while using the painting tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, or causes the damage or destruction of the tools, materials, equipment, and/or facilities, the event participant must undertake all related liability and provide compensation for the financial losses. Persons not involved in the accident and the museum do not undertake any liability for personal accidents.

CAFA Art Museum Portraiture Rights Licensing Agreement

According to The Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China, The General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and The Provisional Opinions of the Supreme People’s Court on Some Issues Related to the Full Implementation of the General Principles of the Civil Law of the People’s Republic of China, and upon friendly negotiation, Party A and Party B have arrived at the following agreement regarding the use of works bearing Party A’s image in order to clarify the rights and obligations of the portrait licenser (Party A) and the user (Party B):
